Tool Boxes
Tool Boxes
Hey everyone,
I'm looking to graduate to the world of rolling tool boxes with slideable drawers .... no more of those small carrying around type tool boxes
anyhow, Im looking at the Snap-on heratige series 7 drawer box
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog
and im just wondering what kind of boxes you guys are using and how they're holding up? I'm not looking to spend more than $1,000 for the box and I want to have good bearings on the drawers. Ideally im looking to be able to use this box forever without the drawers starting to stick or not shut properly or what have you.
any help would be great, thanks

I have a typical Craftsman Professional with ball-bearing slides (a must). Nine drawer upper, three drawer intermediate, and a seven drawer base. I have a matching work cart that I place the tools I need access to in for the project for that day. Snap On, Mac, and some Craftsman are all built to last decades with proper care. I clean it once a month and clean any tools used at the end of the day before they go in the chest.
One thing to watch out for is plastic end stops on the slides. Some are advertised as ball-bearing, but if you pull out the drawer too fast or if you've over loaded the drawer and it has too much momentum, the plastic end stop breaks and the drawer flies out spilling your tools and ball bearings all over the floor.

Some of the Tool boxes,Like Snap-On are actually made at the Plant here in Smiths Falls..Stanley Tools..So that tells me that Even though it says "snap-on" On the tool box it is actually The same Generic Tool box, only with a Couple extra Features.Like the Rubber Mats inside the Tool Drawers!..so Be Wise, shop around. If the Darn thing Holds tools and doesn't Bust at the sides. Then Buy it!.
Im a Automotive Technician, so I have seen alot of tool boxes. I personally bought a big Snap-on box. Reason is simple, I have seen Snap-on Tool boxes that are 25 years old, every drawer has been opened and closed several times a day, and really they are still holding up strong. I know other companys make most of Snap-on's tools but the bottom line is that its good stuff. Some people dont understand the quality a tool must be when you use it ten times a day. I know most of us Rx-7 owners do though.
If your are going to buy that snapon box
1. make sure its going to be big enough, think of the future
2. Dont get Red. Everybody has Red.
3. You really wont regret it, youll have something nice to respect and take care of.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice! I went to Canadian tire and costco to check out their tool boxes and I wasnt impressed with the drawers even though i can get a lot more for a lot less - unforutnatly sears didnt have any tool boxes at the time i was in.
When I was at a kart race I noticed a lot of guys had snap-on boxes in their pits which was what really persueded me to look at the more expensive boxes. I also noticed one team with a large work table which was bolted ontop of the box and supported by 2 legs on either side - it was about 1.5m x .5m. Ive been looking around snap-on's website but can only find covers that are the same dimention as the box so im leaning towards that being a custom top.... any thoughts on that?
-Thanks
