BC Tariffs on Used Cars From US into Canada

On the news today, guy that recently bought a used 1969 Charger in Texas got hit with almost 50% in tariffs and other charges when he tried to bring the car across into Canada. Although "used cars" does not appear on published lists of tariffed items, it appears there are more items covered than are showing on the published lists. In this case the category was "used cars over 25 years old".

It was 25%, plus the regular 13% HST that they charge on both the 25% and the value of the car.

Country of origin determines duty, so if you buy an RX-7 from the states there will not be duty (but there will still be 13% HST).

Now there is a news item on CBC today, that the border officials made a mistake and the countervail tariffs do not apply. Seems the guy will get his car across.

I guess you have to get on the national news and have a good cry.

Small price to pay.

These tariffs suck on both sides. I get parts for my kei van from mini4x4.ca and now I can enjoy extra tariffs on them next time I order something.

Its not just the tariffs, the massive increase in bureaucracy needed to enforce them will be an equal problem..

When they removed the "$800 exemption" the post office almost instantly froze up.
