Stricter laws against racing in ON, +Question
Stricter laws against racing in ON, +Question
Hey guys,
I don't know too much about this myself, but I heard that a law was passed a few days ago in Ontario that allows police officers to impound your car on the spot if you're caught street racing. Now, this itself doesn't bother me because I don't street race. However, I am hearing stories of people getting pulled over, getting ticketed, and getting their cars towed because of the presence of aftermarket modifications. I am not talking about ultra-riced vehicles, but even harmless things like aftermarket wheels, mild-lowering springs, mufflers, etc.
I have not seen any solid evidence of this, just hearsay at this point.
I currently have the RacingBeat turbo-back exhaust on my RX-7. I love it, but It really stinks.
My concern is that an officer will follow my stink trail, pull me over, and write me a fat ticket.. or worse, tow my car.
If what I hear is true, I will seriously consider reinstalling my stock exhaust system.
I just have one little question. I bought the car with the RB exhaust on, so I have no idea how a stock RX-7 smells. I've only driven one stock RX-7 prior to buying mine, but I honestly cannot remember how strong the exhaust gases smelled. Would reinstalling the stock exhaust solve my stink issues?
Much thanks guys.

I worked at an e-test facility for a bit, and i was always told if a car's exhaust stinks, it'll probably fail, did you pass your e-test with the smelly exhaust?

I'd also like to know if this has happened, the passing of the new law, and people with their cars. I don't really stay up to date with the news and such. I remember seeing CFTO a while back when they started crushing people's cars. They had a tape of a guy who got pulled over in a Civic that was modified to the ****. This thing had some bright *** red paint job, with a body kit, and rims and such, but the hood was opened and this thing was sparkling inside too. Anyhow the officer was hassling the guy asking him questions such as why he did the modifications and such, and the guy just got pissed off because of the cameras, and he just drove away or something. Anyhow, this is the first time hearing of such.

They are really after only the young kids. Be responsible and dont race, Last year i was drivng my car with no plate and with 99spec conversion. Still looked stock, but if anyone knows my car it's very very loud. Yet, they never seemed to pull me over. Could it be that I acted like normal person driving? Probably, they maybe getting strickter. All the more reason to act right and dont add stupid body kits to your cars. I drove, for 10km last year beside a cop didnt even look at me and I know he herd me. So just be mature about it.
Hmm.. well I heard it on the radio that the legislation was passed.
Apparently the harrassment problems are occuring in Toronto and the GTA (where I live). There's a thread somewhere on a Subaru board about this... I'll see if I can find it.
No, the e-test was done with the stock exhaust on.

Trending Topics
I've been reading most of the day the threads from various car clubs.. STi's are being impounded with OEM exhausts, aftermarket wheels are being ticketed and impounded.. I've noticed no hits though on hot rods or street rods.. and no hits on domestics of any numbers to make it anything but a minor percentage.
All stops I've heard of have resulted in the FULL use of the ' law' such as it is.. Tickets, plates pulled, car impounded for later scrutineering by the MTO. These come from police stopping a driver for doing nothing but having a car that 'looked fast' ? or 'looked' like a street racer. Whch egs the questio, why are the lambo's/porsches/vetes and GT mustangs not being pulled over for the same reasons.. as always way more questios then actual answers.. probably because random knee jerk election policy has no answers.. it's a facade to gain votes..

Post up the links... the rex may get traded in on a V8 jag sooner than later...

AW...fak...
i was about to install race seats and race harness...(anyone knows if you can be pulled over, ticketed/towed away for this??)
i can understand to be pulledover, ticketed/suspension for racing on the street... but to get ticket coz..your car look fast...but you drive within speed limit (that is just plain suck).

To the original poster, I run the RB turbo back. It's very quiet compared to just about any other "performance" exhaust out there. The big silencer even looks like a cat. If someone says why does your car stink you can just tell them it's broken or something like that.
The solution is to get massively ported motors such as brigdeports or P-ports so that the cops think you have a v8 in there when you are idling at a stop light, that way they will leave you alone.

Everyone knew this was going to happen. It comes as no surprise. The more your car "looks" non-OEM, they're going to pull you over.
More so in York or Peel region.
Which is why you have to avoid the local "hangouts". You park in a Timmies parking lot, be prepared for the consequences.
It's going to be a crime to drive around nice vehicles.
Don't get me wrong, there are alot of Honda's and Toyota's out there that shouldn't be modified. The factory never intended for an econobox to be a performance machine.
All "kids" fall in this category.
The Subaru's are slowly falling into this category. Which is a shame because I've seen some really nice examples this past weekend.
You can drive your car during the day (to and from work) or on the weekend (again during the day). Take your car out at night and be prepared for the consequences!!
Damn punk *** kids!

it's going to be a crime to own a car that the some cop or politico sees as being a ' street racer' I don't think we'll see too many Italian, German or British sports cars getting pulled over, even though they probably have 2x -4x the Hp of the cars pulled over on the weekend.. I don't think we'll see the cops harassing street rods or hot rods any time soon even though most run straight pipes, uncovered wheels and poor to no seat belts..
this is such a charter of rights infringement..

Seems kind of vauge. Does anyone know the precise details of what was passed? Normally even if legislation pass through parlement it takes a little bit of time to go to the lt. govenor, etc.
I think the police are much more agressive in the GTA than elsewhere.
If what the Subaru people are claiming is correct, this sounds a lot like what a "wallet inspector" might do.
If I was going to risk it, I wouldn't take my car to a GTA OPP.

Honestly guys,
I got this advice from a fellow forum member and after catching a 550$. Carry a voice recorder it really comes in handy when you get to court. Also, don't forget to ask the officer for permission to record your conversation
. The ideal is a video camera.
The police officer doesn't have a right to "make" you pop your hood. But he has every right to "ask" you and if you say yes well you fucked. Think about it, what is the police officer going to do by looking in your engine bay that is going to make him KNOW that you are breaking the law?
It is like when the police officer asks you, "Do you know how fast you were going son?" If you say "Yeah 130" even if you were doing 160 at least he has you doing 130. But if you say "no officer, I don't know how fast I was going", remember it is HIS job to tell you what you were doing wrong and this is where the voice recorder comes into use. If you meet in court and the ticket or police report doesn't line up with what he says it is a big plus for your case. I say this from experience.
I am sure if I would have had a voice recorder on my last ticket I would have won it in court instead of having to negociate it down.

Here's the link for a mildly modified VW... this is harassment and profiling. The only way this will stop is by registering complaints with the police services bureau...

You see. Perfect example of econoboxes looking like "racecars". It's not too bad, clearly there are others out there that look more outrageous. But it was enough for the cops to warrant a search.
From the looks of the pics the car is very low. And everyone knows those are not the factory wheels. The black tint and the big exhaust complete the ricer package.
It's total bs, but like someone posted on the forum, the cops are trying to enforce this new rule.
We'll see how many rotaries get pulled over and have to explain to the cops the car has no cylinders! lol

"The legislation would give police the power to suspend a suspected streetracer's driver's licence and impound the vehicle for seven days"
YEH!!!!

Damn our country is stupid sometimes. "suspected" is so arbitrary.
This actually reminds me of this one time while I was working according to sources a black Camaro with two young teens inside was doing burnouts in the parking lot, lost control hit a car and the impact sent the car into my car.
So I go out see all of this and the driver was there. I ask the officer can't you give him at least something it is obvious reckless driving and he is like no I can't do anything because it is a private property, but he can tow your car away for "looking" like it fits a race profile.

As Bass and pd_day stated this is proposed legislation and these recent detentions have nothing to do with the above. As you can see there are ample mechanisms for the Police to make your life difficult even now.
What pisses me off is that people are running to change there cars back to X or Y. Why not take the time to read the provisions you have allegedly contravened before actually doing anything. We need people to stand up and fight back when there are oppressive rules imposed upon law abiding citizens. Bending to the man doesn't help anyone...fight back!
If you believe your car is safe as required by the code why would you change anything?
Now if you cut your springs, and have tires hanging out of the wheels wells etc. you deserve to get the book thrown at you.
This hobby can fit with the rest of the countries ideals provided we act in a safe environmentally friendly manner ourselves. The only way to prove that is to not change your car when you and others are willing to argue that it is safe or EPA compliant.
Rant over.

Or, everyone just move out to the country. I drove around a bright green flamed Jetta diesel with leaky (loud as fawk) exhaust for years and was only yoinked once for a headlight being out. And didn't get a ticket.
Of course, then once everyone moves to the country it would become the city, at which point you'd all have to move back out of humble abode
