Just wondering if anyone in the GTA would be willing to help out a novice Rx-7 enthusiast pull an engine from a 85 SE - possibly this Saturday (June 9th) or next Saturday June 16th. I'm located in Richmond Hill (Yonge & Major Mac)

Compensation? BBQ steaks and beer (the good stuff - not that Lucky Lager crap).

Hey, I live in the Yonge & Elgin Mills area. Sorry, I don't have the experience with pulling engines, can't help you there. Are you doing a rebuild or a motor swap? Could you post pics of your car? I find 1st gens to be really nice cars as well.

 

how far are you guys from hillcrest mall? I go there sometimes for lunch

 

I may be able to help, should be able to have it out in an hour. What time frame were you thinking? I'm about 10 minutes away.

 

Hi - thanks for the responses so far.

I plan on rebuilding the motor (perhaps with some help) and transplanting it into a 83 GSL (the body is in much better condition). I have a bad back and it's my first pull ever so I thought recruiting some help might be wise. :-)

racerjason: I'm available both days morning or afternoon - but keep in mind that beer tastes better after 10am.

I'll post some pics tonight...but they ain't so pretty since this is a project car. A project in it's beginning stages.

I hear what you're saying Neo. I enjoy working on cars too, and would love to help, except I don't know enough about swapping motors and would only get in the way. Haha.

 

If I wasn't working I'd help but I am.

 

...well we could just gather around the car in lawn chairs, drink beer, and discuss how someone with experience might do it. We can even flip through the Haynes manual and look at all the pretty pictures. :-)

Do you have a hoist or are renting a collapsible one? Do you have the correct assortment of tools to complete the job? Trays to collect fluids? Just checking to see how prepared you are. I'm still playing with my schedule.

 

I was going to rent or buy the hoist depending on the day that it's done.

Trays and empty canisters for fluids...check.

I have most tools...but I think I'm lacking an oversized breaker bar. Most of my work thus far has been interior related...so I haven't needed to remove anything with a lot of force.

Anything you'd specifically recommend?

Don't sweat it if you can't make it. Were you thinking this week or next?

 

I used to wrench on my VW's and I've got an engine hoist if needed, depending on what day I'd be glad to help. I've never pulled an engine from a rear wheel drive car but I'm sure it wouldn't stop me

 

there isn't anything Special about Pulling an engine From an RX7 compared to a Piston car.Suggestion,Take the Rad out,and you have lots of room to Maneuver the engine..IF you are Renting a HOIST: get all the bolts/nuts Etc all off/undone First.Get the Hoist and Remove the Whole Drivetrain as one(Eng and Trans).When replacing Put them Back in as ONE again.Put the engine mounts on,Once the Engine is above the Mount Points(easier,no **** to get Snagged up on).Have someone Under the car to Lift the transmission UP to Bolt the Trans Mount in,Tighten up the Engine mounts and Voila!.Heart Transplant Pretty well done!

 

Thanks for the tips everyone. Looks like June 16th is the date (since today is the 9th - lol). So if anyone is in the mood to get their hands dirty, shout directions from the lawn chair or show off their car to my neighbours - let me know and I'll PM the address. Realistically only one, but about 12 to say how dirty their hands got when they didn't do anything, and the people who do nothing will drink more beer (or lady drinks), and eat more steak.

 

One person alone can pull the engine out of the car. I've done it when i was too impatient on getting help. However it is quite the pain in the *** and pretty time consuming considering you have to keep moving things around and the tranny like to get caught on the transmission tunnel.

 

I will probably drop by to say "hi" since I'm in the area. I have a 2 foot long breaker bar I can bring if you need it., fits half-inch drive sockets.

 

Did this yesterday... 1hr 15 minutes by myself (was the 1...2...3...4th time I did it).

Basically: Rent engine hoist (buy if you plan on doing this more than 4 times). Drain Fluids, Pull off all the wiring and vacuum hoses. Remove the intake tube, and the throttle body and UIM as a unit, then the exhaust manifold, separate the mannifold from the motor.

Remove the starter, and the tranny bolt hidden underneath it. Remove the 4-5 other bolts connecting the engine to the tranny. Screw the top-passenger side one in a little so that the engine hanger is useable.

Hook up the hoist, put some tension on it, remove the engine mount (first from the engine, then from the chassis) and pull it out of the car.

Yank on the engine hoist, it'll separate from the tranny. Lift the engine out, and crack a beer.
