Atleast it's not till 2010, I'm curious to see if they will allow the regional regulations to stick i.e. Ontario and the 1987 and older rule.

This is going to cause the price of a vehicle to skyrocket. Not to mention the economic effects like this:

Don't get all bent out of shape - this legislation will never pass as is.

The focus of any of these new laws is to lower emissions from new cars not old ones - just look at the Ontario exemption age! They write these policies to keep the tree huggers happy and make it look like they care about the environment.

In 4 years they will do a feasability study and a budget and deem that enforcing the legislation as it is written today is too costly. The restraints will be relaxed and the focus will be on commercial pollution and new cars.

Every few years the Ruling Government releases a harsh crtisism of the surrent environmental standards and implements a long term policy to make it look like they care - then that policy never sees the light of day. As time goes by, emmissions standards will get tougher, but mostly for new cars. I wont woory about any of this until I get a letter in the mail saying I need to have my car meet some new standard.

Nick you are likely right, but that still doesn't make up for the lost jobs in the involved industries, it's a hell of a way to screw up the nice economy we have going for us right now, it may just be the start of a trend.

The 20 year rule is going bye-bye, BTW. And you never were allowed to run straight pipes, unless your car came from the factory with them.

Honestly, blaming the job losses on the environmental acts is purely a scapegoat. The reality is that you don't cut 100 jobs overnight unless there has been a steady downward trend in their sales over a long period of time. Saying it is because their trucks will have to cost more next year is simply blowing smoke up the asses of all laid off workers.

A more likely reason is that since the rise in gas prices over the last 5 years, people have becom,e a lot more concerned with shipping costs and logistics. It used to be that shipping via truck was cheap and easy. These days most major companies have Logistics departments to cut down on costs and up productivity. Even people like FedEx and UPS have had to adapt to a more educated and concerned clientelle. Ever since people have figured out ways to cut down on shipping costs and frequency, there have been fewer needs for large fleets of trucks.

If you want to blame someone about job cuts and economic impact, blame unions! GM, Ford and Chrysler are in dire straights now mostly because of their unions. That has a far greater impact on the economy than a 10% rise in large truck prices.

Nick you are likely right,

Yup, he nailed it.

Even if a substantial number of jobs were lost due to nation-wide changes in vehicle emissions rules and standards (doubtful) said job losses would pale in comparison to what would have happened under the implementation of Kyoto policies as envisioned and signed onto by Cretien and company--- against the will and without consultation of us "lowly peasants" btw. Now that would have been scary. Harper has nothing on the previous governments in the fright department.

Besides, nation-wide mandatory vehicle inspections would actually create jobs for those at the test facilities, as well as those in the auto parts sales and service industry.

Sweet, a $35/hr union job for a $12/hr job with nothing to fall back on. It will create jobs but they are fall out jobs, and pay sweet **** all.

You can't overlook the fact that they have been producing a large amount of products that are of **** quality when compared to a lot of the "imports". The Big Three's dire straights positions were predicted years ago with this observation named as the "future cause" of their impending demise.
