Shipping Cost

Why does it cost so much to ship from the States to Canada??

It is almost twice the cost to ship over the northern border then it does to ship across the U.S.

FedEx wants 60 bucks to ship some door panels from California to Saskatoon, SK, Canada... and that's with a company discount..... is there a cheaper way???

I'd be curious of this too. Just ordered 70lbs of stuff from racingbeat to be shipped up to regina and honestly im scared of what the shipping costs are going to be with fedex.

Fed Ex is a $35 brokerage fee, plus shipping cost, plus HST, any applicable duties, etc. We keep a mail box in Lewiston NY and have everything sent there.

Also interesting: Ship to the Border

If you ship to a warehouse in Niagara Falls NY, your shipping costs are half. They charge $6.00 per package and you go pick it up and clear customs etc yourself. I did that with my CCW wheels and saved a fortune. Here is the link to the warehouse. The place is 2 minutes across the border.

CBI USA | US Mailbox Rental & US Shipping Address Services

Its cheap and incredibly easy!!

Try USPS instead.

edit: nvm, door panels are a bulky item, probably not going to find much cheaper.

The problem for people out in the boondocks like me is that there is nowhere close by that I can do customs clearing. The lucky sods in Ontario have all kinds of options for these kinds of issues.

I use Montana Shipping Outlet, which has a pickup point just a couple blocks from the Coutts-Sweetgrass border crossing. Coming from Saskatoon, you definitely wouldn't save enough on $60 shipping to cover your gas, even if there is a similar outfit at a crossing closer to you - the $60 actually sounds pretty reasonable for the bulky item. You could have the seller Grey Hound it, but I don't know if they do trans-border shipping.

On a moderately large order last year (sway bar, bushing set, lower suspension brace, set of plugs), the shipping from Florida was about $60 to Sweetgrass, and over $200 to go the last 250 km to Calgary. So to save roughly $150, I can drive down to Sweetgrass on a day off, pickup up my stuff, and carry on to Great Falls to shop there, where things like runners, car batteries, and food will be roughly half as expensive at the Walmart there as they are in Calgary.

Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a $40 customs clearance fee plus assorted other fees on anything shipped UPS or FedEx - USPS way better, I find they are often just as fast if you're not paying for overnight, and no extra fees, often I don't even get charged the GST I should be charged, as was the case a few years back when I had some BBS alloys shipped from Georgia to Calgary - delivered to my door (also a surprise), 60 bucks, and not even the GST added, and they took a little over a week, while UPS routinely takes 2 weeks for small packages from the US.

If you are dealing with UPS especially, clear your own package! UPS charges ridiculous fees for brokerage and if you clear it yourself, you are often paying 10% of what UPS will charge you.

There is lots of info out there on how to do it and it's pretty easy. UPS may make a stink but they are legally required to allow you to do this and often the 1st tier phone people don't even know (or are instructed not to admit) it. They will bitch and moan that you need to refuse delivery first but that's not true either because all you need is the paperwork, which you can get with the tracking number, which UPS will have at their distro center before the package arrives. Then follow the instructions (available online) and clear the package at your local CBSA.
