A Serious Engine build

I just finished up a very serious race engine for a customer and a forum member (Redshift) from Halifax today.

As far as I know there is no other engine like this one, which means I spent ALOT of time trying different things and designing the ports. I also wrecked a set of S5 T2 irons in the process trying my port design lol. Oh well!!

Heres a list of parts that went into the engine build:

S5 Turbo 4 port irons - Custom Full Bridge Port
S5 Turbo Housings - Water Jacket mod
RX8 Rotors - EDM wire cut apex seal grooves to accept pre-Renesis apex seals
RX8 Eccentric Shaft - new
RX8 Stationary Gears - new
RB Race 2mm Carbon Apex Seals + Springs
RB Race Rotor Bearings
RB Thermal Oil Pellet for Eccentric Shaft
Atkins Oil jets for Eccentric Shaft
Pineapple Racing Aluminum Oil Pan
Turbo Oil Pump
RB Adjustable Oil Pressure Regulator
RB Oil Pressure/Temp Sender Adapter
RB Stainless Steel Oil Cooler Lines
Pineapple Racing OMP and Air pump Block off plates
Lightened Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel, Auto Counterweight and Race clutch
12A ignition
51IDA Weber Downdraft Carb w/ RB Intake Manifold

The porting took a very long time and alot of measuring to get right because we used RX-8 rotors the side seals are in a different location than the older rotors so the bridge port had to open really early to keep the sideseals from dropping into the intake port.
Like I said before I wrecked a set of S5 T2 irons trying something a little different and ended up porting right through the iron into the water jacket. But hey...I learned something

I'm getting the engine setup on an engine dyno over the weekend and should have some video of this thing BRAP BRAP BRAPing next week.

Yeah, pretty much the port timing of a PP but using the side ports

Lotsa fun

I'm not really sure what to expect for power....I guess we'll find out!

That looks good, Will be nice to see the results.

Hope the RX8 rotors with the overlap will give the aimed power goal.

want to definilty see the videos of the engine on the dyno running !

I'm really excited to see how the Renesis rotors are going to work in the side port intake engine.
I've seen lots of the Aussies trying the RX-8 rotors in PP engines and actually losing power. Only thing I can think of is that the combustion bathtub isn't very deep (because of its higher compression) and it doesn't allow the air from the PP to flow in properly.
So with these rotors being used in a heavily ported side port engine (which they were originally intended for) I'm curious to see how they work.

Wow, it's so pretty... I want it! Oh, wait.. it's mine. I'm so used to drooling over other people's projects on here...

I'm really interested to see what it does. My inner child got all excited about doing something different, so when I talked about it with Joe and we hatched the plan, I got kind of excited. Now I just hope it works. I'm glad to see Joe didn't tell me about the Australian's losing power on their PPs until now..

I got the RX-8 rotors for about the same price as a set of S5s was going to cost me, so even if it doesn't work better (only "as good") then I more or less come out even.
(Actually, that's how all this started. I was shopping for a set of S5 rotors, came across a set of RX-8 rotors, said to Joe, "Hey, would these work ok instead?" and it was all downhill from there....

Plus, I got to be part of an interesting experiment, which has it's own intrinsic value.. or so I keep telling my self...

Let's hope so. The limiting factor has always been my (lack of) talent, so I'm using the old racing trick of spending money to throw horsepower at the problem to compensate....

ON Two, no Make That Four Thumbs Up.

Baahhhh, it looks like a girly motor for a girly car...... Just kidding, the motor looks great and should make monster power. What RPM are you planning on turning? I know from Al's experience with the peri port that it really doesn't turn on until he's over 6,000 and really pulls over 9,500 rpm. The car needs the 4.88 or 5.12 to really work. A close ratio box is very helpful.

I have incuded a video of Paul Viera's RX7 peri port with a Saenz box. First the car is just freakin' fast and always on the pipe, so to speak. Secondly, where Al and I shift twice up the back straight (me 2 to 3, 3 to 4/ Al 3 to 4, 4 to 5), Paul picks of 4 gears. This ability to always have the motor on the boil means that he can run with the 3 rotor 3rd Gen. Very interesting bit of video, though depressing to me as I don't have $8,000 to drop on the whole setup.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1OPomuD4p2I

Paul is batting way above his weight, but the gearbox really, really helps the car come alive. By the way, I think Paul dropped into the 1:29's on Toyo RA1's, last year. Al will know for sure. That is way to fast for a second gen. on street tires.

I will get that box over to Joe this weekend. Best of luck with the effort.

Thanks Eric, for all of that, plus the box.

My plan was to do gearing this winter, but, well, some engine issues and here we are.
I'll just have to struggle through with stock gearing for this year, and hope I can afford it for next winter.

I'm already in WAY deep for club racing as it is, so I figure I'll try it at our track this year as it is.

Should be good for close to 10,000rpm, but will probably set the limiter to around 9500rpm or so in the interests so longevity.

Our track is pretty tight, and I was barely getting it into 4th gear as it was last year. I figure with an extra 2000rpm to play with, I might just carry 2nd and 3rd all day.

Seriously Joe, thats a serious engine! Paul''s fast lap was a 1:31 I believe. Paul leaves turn 5 in 1st gear, with my MX7 box I leave in 2nd gear with tires that are an inch shorter than his. Just to give you an example of the difference:
My Miata/RX7 hybrid box gears ratios from 1st to 5th 3.13 1.833 1.303 1.1 .840
Pauls Saenz 2.045 1.636 1.330 1.145 1.1
At Mosport with the P.Port and MX7 trans I picked up and average of 2 secs, but at Shannonville I am actually SLOWER on protrack with the P.Port and MX7 trans than I was with a bridgeport and stock trans.

Is Brent hurting that badly for work that he needs you to ask questions like that? Because I'm sure we all know he does that work by now!

BTW sorry to pollute your thread Joe the engine looks good.

Lots of time went into figuring out the porting, really the rest of it was the same as any other engine.
As for re-surfacing irons, there is nobody local (K-W area) that can do them right. We are looking into getting our own blanchard grinder to do such a thing in the future. A company just down the street from us does heat treating so we'd be setup for it then.

These irons were perfectly fine, dont fix what aint broken

Looks real purty. Thanks for posting that video, that FC is serious! I want it Forget this turbo bs lol.

Anyways, is anyone interested in GSLSE gearing in a FC NA tranny with case/pressureplate/clutch PM me. Not asking much for it, and you can use it as a good spare incase anything happens during race season!

Thanks, michael
