rotaries are so complicated that people fail at making fun of them:

I was talking about rx7s on another forum and some guy who owned a talon, obviously not knowing anything about rx7s, decided to post this:

I love how they point out those "face seals"... dont you just hate it when your face seals fail??

you know what I think? the author needs his face sealed with my fist for being a) an eagle talon fanboy and b) a complete tard.

If it was your friend, tell him to get his facts straight before trying to insult people or things. He will come off looking at least slightly smarter.

It's too bad my "face seals" are worn out, I guess that's why high revs make the engine blow oil smoke out the exhaust.

Large backfires are another symptom of worn face seals.

It is far too much fun to bask in the ignorance that exists around our cars.

Easy Boy it was a joke not trying to insult anyone not everyone knows alot about rotaries and why would they bother to do research? they don't own one

its like how everyone says that all dsm motors crank walk but it was a bad batch of cranks from a factory in japan and not every motor was affected

The irony is when people call an engine with three moving parts "complicated".

thats all part of the joke. the irony is that a piston engine owner that has many more moving parts in their engine is so closed-minded that they have to label the rotary as "too complicated" to formulate a valid joke

It is a bit rich hearing DSM guys putting down rotaries as unreliable. I've been autocrossing and tracking my 7 for 10 years, same as a DSM fan and friend of mine, who likes to trash-talk rotaries. In that time, I've changed the oil once a year (whether it needed it or not!). I've changed brake pads (quick and easy job). I've repacked and adjusted the front wheel bearings a couple times. I've changed the gear and diff oil a few times. I've burned through so many sets of street and r-compound tires I've lost count. And mostly, I've added gas, fiddled with the alignment and suspension settings, and drove the **** out it.

He on the other hand, has had at least 2 motors break due to valve-train/timing chain failures. Another due to crank-walk (maybe 2, or maybe it was a broken rod). More rebuilds due to bearing wear, etc, and another that failed due to oiling issues. You get the idea...

And as far as being a competitive car - I set my 2nd FTD (raw time, not PAX) of this season at a local autocross yesterday. It was a smallish field of ~35 drivers, but there were some serious cars and drivers out, including three Porsches, a new Z06 'Vette, several STI's, and an Elise. Not too shabby!

Also, besides mine and one other RX-7, and an RX-8, there was an RX-3 out, ready for some vintage abuse, even though the owner's not finished with the build quite yet - very cool! Just missing an FD and an FB (there was one nice FB there, but it didn't run for some reason, never got a chance to speak to the driver).
The RX-3:

and me, just because I'm still beaming about the FTD:

Ah that's priceless! I wish I could have been there to see that Rx-3 at that autocross. Nothing like a vintage rotary taking some abuse from the right foot. I'm still waiting for the day when I can put the hammer down on mine.

It was sweet. Nice sound - loud, but not obnoxious or "chainsaw" buzzy, and really cool to see the car tearing it up, and working quite well, even though it's not finished or properly sorted in terms of the suspension. And the car looks great already, just in grey primer - clean & period correct. I think he plans to run it at CAC in Saskatoon on the Labour Day weekend.

Edit: Looking at the engine bay, it doesn't get much more simple than that RX-3 - a pair of dual-barrel carbs with open oval filters and the dizzy were the biggest visual clutter items, otherwise it pretty much did look like a beer keg sitting way down low in the car. There's probably as many parts in the carbs as the engine internals...

Rotarygreg: I'll keep that DSM crankwalk poster in mind and post it next time I see my DSM friend post on the Calgary Sports Car Club site about fragile rotaries
