It was number 2.

What keeps getting mixed up is the facts vs public perception. Terri's family was trying to convince the world (through the media) that she could respond to stimulation with slight twitches or whatever, and that she had some higher brain activity. They would videotape her almost constantly and when one of these blinks or twitches would coincide with a command or a light being put on, they'd use that as "proof" she was lucid. Being the media, all we saw was these clips. But the courts saw all the videos, as did the doctors. They saw her have zero predictable reaction to any stimulation, and they even saw her react to nothing at all when she was alone in the room. That is why the doctors tried for years to convince the family to let her go, and that is why the husband won every one of his law suits.

It's true. It bothers me that there is such a weight put in "public opinion" and that this type of circus can result. Her wishes were made clear to her hurband, and she got them in the end. It's a shame that it took 15 years and court battles to sort it out. I'm just worried that some of the bible thumping states will eneact some sort of "Terri Bill" that will create more of these situations in the future.

I share the same concern, especially after Bush's commentary on the case yesterday... Americans are just as "fundamentalist" as the worst of them when it comes to religious matters...

Medical Examiner's report is out:

Her Brain was severly atrophied. It was HALF the size it should have been. She was blind at the time of death as part of the brain problems. Doctor's also determined she had not been abused at any point including her initial collapse.

That her brain was atrophied was apparent in the scans when she was alive... Did the report contain any new information?

But it is so funny to see what money can buy in the U.S.A....how many average joes get the gov't to hold special sessions to try to block someone else's wishes.

What's to be said of the parents trying to buy their daughter back so they can tend to her, the media fed on this like crazy....until a more interesting subject caught the interest of America for more than 15 minutes...
