RHD banned from being able to register starting april 29 2009

Okey , banned in quebec only for now.

As of april 29 2009 the SAAQ ( quebecs public insurence board ). Has band for atleast 6 months the registration of ANY RHD vehicle till they decide what to do.

The RHD cars have been deemed unsafe for quebec roads.

Well it was a good run for tons of cheap cars in quebec. now it will come to an end .

Woah that is not a good sign, rumors have been circling Canada for awhile, not a good sign. Does this BAN all RHD, or just stop the importing? hmmmmm

this is a quebec only law and I doubt it will last even the 6 months.

There's been RHD cars coming to ontario for the past 20+ years, you think it'll stop now just because there are more of them?

for now they banned the registration of ANY rhd. meaning if you bought it today and didnt get it registered then well you can drive it.
And its atleast for the next 6 months. They can prolong it for how ever long.

The thing is in montreal there is honestly hundred of rhd shops, theres streets where there are maybe 6-8 rhd shops.

dont know if it will prolong ot the rest of the country but for sure quebec had the most registrations of rhd cars.

So if they are already registered they are grandfathered to renew? And what if someone buys an already registered Quebec RHD??

I think its more to do with the economy.

Consumers are opting to import used cars from overseas be it japan or the Uk or germany rather buying a new USDM market car (ideally from an American company).

Theres a bigger thread and more details about this on gtrcanada forums.

Their solution is just to get Ontario plates I guess lol

It's been on again off again topic for years. Transport canada has been closely monitoring the RHD car importing already. As long as all the importer behave themselves it should not be an issue over safety.
As for Quebecer's I've heard so many stories about importer bringing in cars that is less than 15yrs old. And they were actually pretty carefree until someone knocked on somebody. So hence the halt for a temporary time until they find a way to better police the industry. thats just my 2cents

Probably yes, because the insurance statistics show right hand drive cars are a higher risk of claims than LHD. While the risk was always higher , the number of drivers didn't make it necessary for the insurance industry to react. Higher numbers of these cars will lead to either ridiculously high premiums , or banning their registration.

I doubt the goverment is afraid to make a law that will **** a few people off .

Probably true - in fact, governments love passing laws that **** a few people off, if they can make it look like they're making things better for the rest of the populace. A little controversy just ensures they get attention when they do it - and they'll trot out some stats or marketing to show they're right, and those opposed are "uninformed".
