Now I have read that possible resurfaced housings offer less durability and sealing characteristics. And have been dyno proven less hp.
Now this was some time ago and JHB offers 10x the durabilty and 16% less fuel consumption and reduces cooling load by 25% and rotor cooling requirements by 40%. (Based on their Cermet A coatings on all motor parts I would assume.) Now if this is true you would supposedly not need a bigger better rad or would ever have to worry about engine temp since even my fluidyne rad only in theory dropped temps by 15% and it was over $410us.
Anyway before I get carried away www.jhbperformance.com.
I would have to say that this claim would have to be 100% true and the coating cost about half the price of a new housing before I would go with this.
I for one have never heard about these guys or seen any real world proof to substantiate these claims.
Also interesting stuff on using their whole coating practive on an entire engine you would think it would be virtually indestructible. Wonder why Mazda does not use this on their motors?

If you go to one SOLO1 weekend that is considered two races. Then... You would've qualified for your discount, and you get to beat hte living crap out of your car at the track. The track has no mercy if seomthing you thought was a bit sketchy the track will make damned sure to bring it out to the lime light and punish you for it. If it doesnt break at the track it's 99% not going to break on the street anytime soon.

I have built about 4 engines in the last 2 months with JHB coated housings on them. All of them have broken in super fast and are running awesome. I saw 95 psi after only about 100kms on a rebuild. BTW that is with lapped end plates.
I would never ever buy a new chrome housing, and would never run anything but cermet in my own personal motors. For the price of new chrome, you can get cermet B housings and still have a couple hundred bux to spend on something else.
There is a Mazda tech paper published for SAE about their coatings used. I would highly suggest that anyone interested in the coatings read it. Mazda tells you in their own words that the cermet is way better than the nitriding and the micro porous chrome surface. The link is around the forum somewhere, thats where I got it.

I wish I could be more insightful about the JHB housings but we're really not going to know anything unless I have to open it up again. I am hoping that will not be necessary anytime soon.
Actually, it's not necessary to open the engine to inspect the housings if you have access to a borescope. The LH sides of the housings can be accessed by feeding the borescope through the leading spark plug holes, and the RH sides can be viewed by either feeding it in through the intake ports or by removing the exhaust manifold and going in the exhaust ports.

I'm still waiting to hear how this goes.
Since i have about 4 housings I would like to get done
Wished that some racing people used it. Maybe then the real data will come out.

yeah, i'm quite interested as well.
i think the debate over coating some decent condition used housing or getting new housings is the biggest issue at the moment. it's hard to tell if this coating will last any longer than stock new housings.
but i DO believe in the fact that the housings are easier to recover after a serious internal failure...but there are certain things that even the coating can't do anything about, and even harder to proove is the reliability of these housings when they have been re-coated multiple times...
but LS the car looks great so far, keep it up

Of course I've answered my own question by now
Just tore apart my engine and it looks like the housings are no better then borderline, so I'm probably going to go the JHB route. It's cheaper then getting new housings, and has to be better (I hope!) than re-using the existing ones or hunting for decent used ones.
