police caugt me driving without insurance
my night began at 6pm when me and a buddy began trying to unflood my fd.
after many attempts, and cleaning off the spark plugs, i was able to start it up.
the car had been in storage since mid november, and i wanted to fire it up tonight so i could have it ready to go to the show at olympic stadium this weekend.
it was time to take the car for a short spin around the block. this was no problem at all. five minutes later, at 10pm i decided it would be best to take the car over to my dad's house and call for insurance tuesday morning.
no cars on the road and only 5 blocks between my moms house and my dads house.
i had my friend in his prelude following closely behind.
i go two blocks and see a police car pull to the stop sign about 40 yards ahead of me and on the right. i get a bad feeling immediately. i pass him the cop going 45kmh in a 50. i really want to aviod him as much as possible, and just keep driving normally. the cop then turns and follows us, he is tailgaiting my buddy. the very next right, its my turn off. we both turn right, he follows. then as we are going 30 in a 40 he decides to go for the pass in a residential neighbourhood. i slow down to give him more space. he immediately pulls behind me and tells my buddy to take a hike.
he asks for my license, insurance, and registration. he first asks "why did you pull over" i say "to give you more space to get by". he then claims that he was only going this way because he got a call. (obviously not) i then say i just took my car out of storage and here is my g license and last years insurance but i left the registration at home. i tell him that i called my insurance broker and told them to insure me starting today (not true). he doesnt buy it. he then said ok. he then started asking me all sorts of questions about the car, and what was legal on it. he then asked, "if you raced my lt1, who would win?" i responded "i 'm sorry, i dont race sir". then all of a sudden, he said "this is what im gonna do, instead of giving you a 5000 dollar fine, im gonna give you a 70 dollar ticket for driving without insurance papers". but then he said, "if i ever catch you again, you're gonna be sorry" i was very thankful, but i didnt know if he meant driving without insurance, or getting pulled over by him in general. but then he told me that i either had to get a tow truck for the last 2 blocks or i could push it. so we pushed it home.
i dont know if im incredibly lucky to get off with a 70 dollar fine, or really unlucky that the only other car on the road was a police car, and that he followed us for no reason

Well, I'm just glad I wasn't caught driving with no licence, people in the car, no insurance, no exhaust and driving 120 down a 60 zone. I never got pulled over but it was way to stressful to be worth it. I calculated it would be about $7000 in fines, and probably some jail time. Thank god those days are over now. RX7's are bad influences.

I was caught in my buddys Supra with no insurance papers or registry. I got off with $575 in total fines. I couldn't find the papers in the car, it was insured and registered. They asked me the same question about who would win, in different words. The officer was like 'Im glad you didnt take off down the side street, I didnt feel like a chase'. I said, 'If I took off down the street, there wouldn't have been a chase'. They started to check it out, look under the hood and ****, asking where I got it. They are more lax here in alberta on performance cars. They had to tow it because it was RHD and under USA Registration and Insurance. I got it back the next day, $575 and no other problems later.
On another note, I knew the officers pretty well. They pull me over in my RX-7's all the time and give me a hard time. I know where they radar so sometimes I bring them timbits. They pulled over the supra because they seen me driving.

You got lucky.
But you were smart as well. You didn't give the cop any lip, and answered his questions honestly (mostly).
Consider yourself lucky - the bottom line is that you broke the law and got caught. You could have been up the creek, but the police man was reasonable with you. Pay the $70 and have a beer. The more people that fight these "Gift Tickets" the less likely the police will be to give them out in the future.
I got pulled over for speeding - 143 in a 100. The cop was really nice, and after a few questions, gave me a 119 in a 100 which had no points and was worth only $62. When I got the Ticket it said "Nissan Rx7". I paid the $62 and moved on. Now it's your turn to take one for the team!

I don't get why he pulled you over in the first place. That's just bizzar. Is there something that screams "arrest me" about it? I like the "i 'm sorry, i dont race sir" comment. He's trying to temp your into getting yourself into trouble.

Nope. But it's not suprising considering the poster.
Glad my excessive insurance charges, including "uninsured driver" coverage is going to good use.

I just got a 1st gen and I have a few questions:
1) how size wheels and tires can I put on?
2) I want to do a 3 rotor conversion, what do I need, and how much will it cost?
3) should I get red or cream coloured brick on my house?
thanks in advance.

Leigh,
1) You can put on p50/12.5R5 on them.. They are super low profile gibing you the extra handling you want.
2) It's easy with our modular rotary system.. Just go out and by yourself a new rotor. Take off the fan from the engine and bolt up the rotor. And bang you've got a 3 rotor coversion. Good for an extra 150 RHP (Rice Horse Power)
3) Red. Cause cream is just silly.
Raven.
P.S. Stop the thread jacking already.

He got pulled over b/c he was driving suspiciously - less than the speed limit. It's considered suspicious- very few people drive the limit, especially in a sports car. If you're driving like you're trying to not get noticed, you're begging to get noticed. If I'd been you, I would have driven past at 10 over. And maybe gotten nailed anyway...

I once got a ticket for driving w/o insurance papers (cop was letting me off an 84 in a 50 zone, about 200$ ticket and 3 points). I also thought it was pretty nice of him.
Then a week later I get a letter in the mail, from the SAAQ (MTO) asking to provide a proof that the car was indeed insured, without the week (not just the paper you carry with you but the actual insurance contract), otherwise I was going to get a 500$ fine.
Thankfully, the car WAS rally insurance, the cop really was just letting me off, but imagine if it hadn't been insured.
Hopefully for you, the law doesn't apply the same in Ontario.

It's funny cause the last time I got a ticket, the cop did not even bother asking for my insurance papers. I got pulled over for going 94 in a 70 zone on the south shore of Montreal. Since then, I got pulled over 4 times for my exhaust, it beeing too loud. 3 times they let me go without a warning nor a fine. I really have nothing to say about the police officers here in Hull, they've always been really nice to me. The funniest thing is that the last cop that pulled me over though my muffler was busted and gave me a warning, saying I had 72 hours to fix it then if I got pulled over again I would get a ticket. Simply replied yes sir, I know sir, it's pierced, I'll fix it asap. I had no experience with the Ottawa police tho, since I try not to go there with my "loud" rex. Quebec plate for an Otario police is very very attractive it seems.... hehe. Really, the real thing is to be "courtois" (sorry, don't remember the word in english) and polite. Do not talk back, NEVER EVER ! My uncle who's a police officer in Quebec told me once, when a guy's beeing a ***** and arguing, I always try to find all the little things I can to make im suffer.
But seriously, to answer the poster question, I think the cop was bored and had nothing esle to do.... He really pushed it IMO. But I agree that going 30 in a 40 zone is really supicious. I'm still surprised about the "racing" question, first time I hear something about a cop asking such a thing... weird.

i got fully insured 12 hours after the ticket.
the ticket only says driving without insurance papers. i wonder if i was to bring my new insurance card to the police station within 72 hours if they would rip up the ticket.
the officer did say to me, "im doing you a favour, you know....you're not gonna take this to court are you"
kingston police do something like that, i got a ticket going 91 in a 60, but it was reduced to 80 in a 60 and i did a quick test and they ripped up the ticket at the station.
