Oil Filters

I know I threatened grievous bodily harm on anyone who asked this again, but I actually have some interesting news to report. There is a difference in qualities of filters and I found one that is basically superior to the great majority of filters out there. A little back story might help, I run remote filters in both of my race cars, so the filter is a PH8 or Ford V8 filter style replacement. A few disclaimers. I change my oil after every 3 weekends of racing or as soon as I notice a drop in hot oil idle pressures. I use my cars in ways that are entirely different than 98% of everyone who will read this. They run as hard as they can for up to 3+ hours and I hate oiling issues. I have tried many types of oils and have decided to go back to Redline Racing oils. I would use Motul, but I haven't won the lottery yet/

So, over the last few years I have been running the K&N Filter for about a eleventy million dollar price tag as I though it was the best available and could withstand the pressures I run (110 psi hot at higher rpm). They worked fine and no real issues with them. Then last fall I had to put a new filter on the RX7 to do the 3 hour race and couldn't grab a K&N as there were none available. The best I could find last minute was a Fram Race filter and screwed it on. Fired up the car and no leaks. Good to go. Ran the car in the 3 Hour last fall and noticed from the videos (I wasn't driving) that the peak oil pressures were off. After the race I could see that there was leakage between the seal and the pedestal mount the filter was on, so I reefed it on harder. It was a bit loose. Ran the GT Superseries race at TMP and again from the incars, the pressures were low again. Hmmm.....

Decided to look for a better filter. Found out that the Wix Racing Filter uses a man made filter element, a silicone anti drainback flapper and larger oil flow holes in the filter. The base plate seems more robust and the case is thicker gauge metal. Popped it on over the weekend and instantly pegged the gauge and it stayed there until the car got warm and then leveled out at 75-80 lbs pressure at idle, about 40 more than it pulled with the Fram. Everything was just like when the engine was new.

So I guess the moral of the story is that there are many filters out there for different amounts of money. They all filter well and are fine for a street car, but I am totally sold that for my race cars, I will only use the Wix Racing Filters and Redline Racing Oil. I love it when I get schooled.

Wix have always been the best but there are others that are just as good....Royal Purple would be one of them, they may even be made by Wix like the NAPA Gold filters are which I used for years in my engines with good results. Where did you buy the racing filter?

Jim, I believe you are right in the other that they make. There are 2 levels and I think the racing ones are the better choice if there is one that will work for you.

I had been looking around for the filters for ages and no one in the Oakville area could or would order them for me. I went to the Motorama Show and in the Karbelt sponsored manufacturers area, I met the guys from Wix and asked them where I could buy the filters. They told me Performance Improvements and a Jobber in Milton were the closest places to me. I really wanted to use their filters, so they sent me a few to start with and from then on I will need to get them from PI. They told me PI carries them in stock.
