New project 1987 RX7 GXL

Hey just thought I'd say hello in the canadian section. I purchased my 1987 RX-7 GXL about a month ago with 81,000 kms and quickly stored it for winter. My focus for the last three years has been on my 1997 Honda prelude but as its approaching completion in my eyes I was dying to start something new. I've always like the FC and it's completely different since its rwd and rotary.

I'm located in Ontario in the Vaughan and Hamilton area. Can't wait to get the car out in the spring especially when ill have some more funds to work on it. I haven't really even had a chance to take a good look at it but it seems to be in reasonably good condition. I'd like to come out to some meets in the spring and gain some more knowledge.

I got onto the forum a couple weeks before i got the car in order to research it before buying one but I just finally got my post count up to make a thread in this section. Found the FAQ in the second gen section to be extremely useful.

Welcome aboard!

I find the Canadian forum slows down in the winter months as most 7's are stored this time of the year.

Welcome. Looks like a solid, clean car from those pictures.
Figured out a plan yet, or just going to see where it takes you?

Welcome to the club!

Have you worked on rotaries before? There's a lot to learn. Have you thought about upgrading to a turbo?

Understandable. I lucked out finding a spot to store it it would've killed me to have it sit under a pile of snow

Thanks man. I purchased the car so that I could learn how to do a swap. I haven't decided which exactly yet but I'll stick to a rotary. Also as one strut is leaking im going to order some coilovers before spring.

Thanks dude, no I haven't worked on rotaries but I'm very interested in learning. With my prelude I went all with visual modifications so with this car I want to focus my money all on performance first no matter how tempted I get. I want to have an engine ready for a swap before I pull the car out from the winter. Going turbo was definitely a plan when I purchased it I was just trying to find one with a decent body so I could spend less mine and learn how to do the swap myself. I've done the research but I haven't completely decided which engine. I should have the money around February at which time I'll start ordering parts

A white 1987 Mazda RX7, 2nd gen, GXL...I've seen one like that before. (In my garage. lol)

Tweak the suspension, maximize the tires, open the exhaust with a header. Keep it simple and reliable.

If you wanted a turbo, you should have bought a turbo; that's all I gots ta say bout dat.

Welcome!! Glad to see another rotary dude especially in the Vaughan area! I think I am one of the very few that DD my FC in the winter here but there are a few others that may chime in soon. Seeing that it is an 87, I would focus on removing the Emissions system and replacing the vacuum hoses for starters. Then, depending on the previous owners maintenance, I'd check them injectors, filters, and replace all fluids for a good starting point.

Welcome to the club!

Looks like you have a clean and un-molested Rx7 to make your own.
Good luck and have fun! Cheers!

What can I say you have good taste : p yeah definitely need to work on all those areas. Also I know that the turbo swap can be very challenging but I'm all for putting in the effort to make ends meet. The other issue was I just couldn't afford the turbo II as a new project so I have to start with an n/a as the base. As you said though, way easier just to purchase the turbo model seeing how many components will need to be replaced.

Sweet! Good to know there are more active users nearby. I totally would've dd the rx7 but it just made more sense to take the insurance off one car and keep one of them solid. Also with the prelude already having winter tires and heated seats and mirrors it tends to be more comfortable haha. However, it's also full of rust so it's staying out to take the beating from the salt. Also thanks for the tips, I already started replacing some of the fluids before I put it away but that's the extent of how far I got.

I actually almost bought an 88 GXL the day before I bought this one but it's condition just could not compare to this car's.

I ended up finding it at a used auto sales shop in Vaughan where the guys were terribly unhelpful. They were unwilling to provide any information on the car so I went twice to see the car to inspect it fully before buying it. Some things still came up after purchasing it but nothing critical. I think I ended up being lucky with the condition based on how little background they gave me.

I bought a carproof report as well to confirm that the kms were legit because I was sketching out since the car had an obvious repaint. However, they checked out so I have no complaints.

In that case, this FC was my neighbors then It was a Sunday car and the owner could not get in and out the car anymore like before and no one wanted it in his family. This was the first FC I ever saw other than my old mans and not to mention, he drove that thing so elegant down Langstaff Road. Makes me so happy to know that it was not scrapped!

Nice find, we should meet up in the spring time. I would love to take pictures for both cars sitting side by side.

Cheers

I really hope so! A Sunday car was the best case scenario based on its condition. I was half scared to post it up here because I was worried someone would come back telling me they recognized it for bad reasons hah

Hey!

Since you guys were the first to welcome me to the forum I thought id come back and post my build thread in here to let you guys know what I've been up to the last five months.

The cars coming along, engine, drivetrain and suspension swap all done except that I can't seem to get the engine to stay idle once it's on.

Was hoping to have it on the road before the end of summer but it's really starting to cut it short.
