new member, new project
Tonight I joined the rotary family with the purchase of a 1988 RX7 GXL.
It has 70590km on the odo. It's SUPER clean underneath.
It needs a new front left fender (someone backed into it) and the brakes are just a wee bit scary.
The fuel lines and brake lines need to be replaced. It needs an alignment and maybe new front tires.
The exhaust was replaced in 2003 when the last owner bought it, the rear brakes were done at the same time.
It's got all the options except ABS. Leather, 2+2 seating, factory adjustable suspension (normal and sport mode buttons).
Seems to run OK, but it hasn't really moved in two years so I think it needs a good blast down the highway. I'll wait until it has brakes before I do that.
I'll need to have it e-tested too... eeee!
It was painted two owners ago, and it's a very high quality job. All the trim pieces were removed before painting, the only thing left of the original grey colour is the engine bay.

Is CYM a colour code? If so... more details please. The left front fender is damaged and needs to be replaced. There is a great paint shop here that I am going to have match the colour, but if you have a code to help that would be awesome.

It does look like CYM (Competition Yellow Mica). It's a factory colour on the 3rd gen RX-7.
Paint code is J9

he can't come to the Ottawa meet, he's not a very talented driver!
I see you bought Alex's car. he offered it to me a few times, but the silly house had to be bought instead. (also...it's yellow )
I'm friends with Alex and his family. his dad did the honours of the dent in the fender!! (if I remember correctly).
you need a good blast down 115? see if you can catch my silver rocket.
I saw you in the GTX thingy today I think, at GE.
let me know if you get your car going and want to join us in Ottawa. it's a lot of fun, and ever so close to being legal safe sunday afternoon country driving. you'd enjoy it.

I did look at an AE, but it was extremely disassembled and needed a cash injection too.
This car is pretty clean.
This weekend I'm replacing fuel lines, front calipers, rotors, pads, brake fluid and trying to get the reverse lights to work. Then it's off to a safety.

Project update for anyone that cares:
Tuesday night I had some time to spend with the car, I jacked it up and checked out what I could. The underside is very clean. I knew there was a gas leak when I bought the car so I had a chance to see how bad it was. Diagnosis: new fuel lines required.
The rear brakes are in good shape. I will service them (lube etc) but nothing is required. The emergency brake cables are good. The rear brake lines are good (the main line was replaced not too long ago).
The front brakes are gone. I tried to service the calipers, but the inner two pistons on each front caliper are siezed, further investigation showed me they are full of rust. New calipers required. The front rotors also need to be replaced.
I also don't think the backup light switch is working, the reverse bulbs seem to be OK. The wiring at the switch is not OE.
Wednesday morning I ordered all the parts I need, including shifter bushings from the dealer, and a new sunroof seal.
Cheapest place I could find calipers was Parts Source, at $110 each plus $75 core.
A friend had some Brembo rotors, so I got those from him.
Thursday my parts arrived, and I also bought the supplies I would need to make new fuel lines.
Today I got to work on the lines and brakes. It took me most of the day to replace the fuel lines since it was so hard to route them over the rear end assembly. I didn't want to drop it to get the lines 100% perfect, so 90% perfect will have to do. Car now has no fuel leaks!
Then I got to work on the front brakes.
I think the rotors are the original rotors. In fact I think most parts on the car are the original parts, not much need to replace parts when the car only has 70K.
I can't get the rotors off the hubs, they must be rusted firmly in place. I removed the hubs and am going to seek out a press tomorrow to press the old rotors off and the new ones on.
I'll do an oil change tomorrow too...
I also found an exhaust leak, so I will need to find a gasket to replace the one that is leaking, and then I'll take the car to the mechanics shop for a safety on Monday or Tuesday.

Next update:
Yesterday I tried again to get the rotors off. Took the hubs to my friends 50 ton press and pressed for all I was worth, I think I pulled a muscle somewhere in my mid-section!
Those puppies don't wanna budge. Monday I will drop them at a local machine shop and get them to separate the rotors from the hubs.
I replaced the leaky exhaust gasket... and found another leak! I should have bought two gaskets... oh well. Another project for Monday.
Today I am going to service the rear brakes and do an oil change. woohoo!

And seems the project is rolling perfectly.

haha, yes I did get the screws out. That was the easy part.
I tried again yesterday to bash the snot out of the rotor, still stuck.
So this morning I dropped the hubs off at the machine shop and will pick up the separated parts at lunch time.
Yesterday I also did an oil change, got the rear wiper to work again, serviced the rear brakes and found the wiring problem that is preventing the backup lights from coming on. Someone spliced new but-connectors into the wiring under the car and didn't protect the connectors from the elements, so the copper is all oxidized. I couldn't find my wiring kit so I couldn't fix it yesterday, but it will be fixed tonight! Along with new rotors! woohoo!

If only everyone did what you're doing after buying and before driving their cars!

???
It hasn't passed a safety yet, and all this work is required before it will.
Anyway, picked up the hubs at lunch time, byebye rotors!
Even the machine shop had a hard time getting them apart, so I don't feel so bad now.
They blasted the hubs for me too, I have to press the wheel studs back in and I'll repack the bearings before reassembly tonight.
I tried to find ball joints and outer tie rod ends too. Got the ball joint coming from the dealer, but nobody could get me tie rod ends quickly.
So I ponied up the extra cash and am having them overnighted from Mazda Motorsports.
Got an appointment at the mechanics for Wednesday for safety, means I have to be ready by then!
Can't wait to take a blast down the highway.
