Might be moving to Edmonton

Sooo I might be moving from BC to Edmonton, Alberta in June...

I know there are big shops around there such as rx7 specialties but I don't think I've ever thought of driving my car in snowy conditions..How is it there?? and im probably gonna have to change my oil to a different viscosity..currently have 20w-50

At least theres no aircare there, what a relief...

The winters in Edmonton are extremely cold and very dry. Especially sucks when the wind causes blinding snow. Less snow than Ontario/Quebec so that's a plus. Winter tires should be a requirement for anyone driving in Canada.
Roads in Edmonton are easy to use and will be easier once the Ring Road project is done (Anthony Henday Drive). Big problem with the roads is they're not in great shape from winter causing cracks and potholes.

^^This. Not as dry as Calgary, and longer and colder spells without thaws, awful streets (when I've been up there in my 7 for autocross events at CFB Namao, I've felt like the car aged years from being rattled and pounded). Bonus is they actually choose to use less salt on the roads (at least that was the policy for many years) - it doesn't do jack when it's below -17C anyway, but they tend to use sand and gravel, except when the temps are closer to freezing. So less rust than Ontario, or even most prairie cities.

Don't know about tuners in Edmonton. There's RX-Specialties in Calgary, already mentioned, and Vex Performance and Lightspeed (I think they're still around) in Red Deer.

Too bad about being sentenced to Edmonton, but you do the crime, you do the time

Damn, I forgot about the bad roads... As for the snow and cold weather, I'm probably not gonna be driving much or at all in winter anyways.
I'm too broke to afford a separate truck..LOL I'll take rides from my brother whos already doing his time there haha

Well I'm not really looking for tuners, as the car is going to remain as stock as possible for reliability. Just good to know there are shops that can work on my engine when the time comes tho

I'm doing some stuff on the car to make it super duper daily drivable for spring, summer and fall.
I already undercoated the wheel wells with the rubber stuff. I should undercoat the whole undercarriage before heading out there too.

Thanks for the info guys!

Starting a rotary at -40 is a task. Everything has to be just right!

Once you get it running you have to watch oil pressure. I used to put a piece of cardboard infront of the oil cooler when I started it, or it would not flow oil untill the motor had heat. Then you pull out the cardboard and off you go.

Sometimes I had to have it pulled around for a mile or 2 before it would fire. Coldest I ever start it was -48. F***ing cold!

I move to BC instead!. Mind you this was all with points ignition back in 78/79 with the RX3!

Do your RX7 a favour and park it for the winter, prep it for serious cold!

Yeah, I'm gonna be parking it for the winter but I'll still have to drive it around in the cold, fall and pre-winter seasons of Edmonton..Ive been there once and it was cold as fk!

Can anyone give me some insight on the Out Of Province Vehicle Inspection? What do they check specifically? I want to make sure my car passes the first time. Do they check the emission parts of the car?

Less than BC, or most places, for that matter. No emissions, at any rate. The gist of it is, pretty much all the mechanical and electrical bits need to work, pads and rotors need to be in tolerances, tires probably need to have 2/32 or more tread, shop won't pass them with less, even though the legal requirement here is only that there be "visible tread"

http://transportation.alberta.ca/2821.htm

Shop around, prices vary greatly on the inspection.

Oh snapp

I wonder if my car will pass with no A/C, and no windshield wiper fluid. But the wiper works obviously. No radio, and im planning on throwing out ALL of emission stuff out before heading out.

Put in a winshield washer tank? No fluid is a fail on the inspection.
A/C doesn't matter. Just make sure the heat works. Good blower motor with fans working at all speeds.
Radio doesn't matter.
Some shops are strict and will fail people with a LOUD exhaust. Make sure it is within reasonable limits and don't worry about your catalytic converter.
NO windshield, front window tint. Don't use gay tinted tail lights either.
Don't use any wheel spacers.

As long as your car is in good condition you'll pass without a problem. Try a place like Kaltire that will see many OOP inspections throughout a day .

No working washers will = fail; it's considered a safety item (rightly so, here - it won't work to tell them it won't be winter driven). Also, windshield can't have cracks in front of the driver, or running from side to side (pretty much the same as BC's rules, iirc).

Well, looks like I'm not gonna be moving actually...Thanks for all the help guys!
I will still need to get this car into total daily driver-able state as I don't want any trouble with it during college..

starting with my suspension...make it less stiff, raise it half an inch.
as for exhaust, stick a cat in there with airpump.
