Well, it's pretty outlandish looking - the front grill's and openings suggest a baleen whale to me . The overall shape of the front and cabin areas isn't bad though, and while the rear is interesting (and I don't mean that in the rolled-eyes sense of interesting), it's obviously not likely to make it into a production car. More interesting was the 16x engine news - I've wondered if Mazda could increase the width of the trochoid chamber to overcome the poor combustion and thermal efficiency of the current combustion chamber shape. I'll be very interested in the power and torque characteristics, as well as fuel efficiency, since I'm sure these are probably the 2 biggest knocks on the current RX-8.

At least if you upgraded rims you'd only have to buy 2 lol.

I'd rock that.

the engine news has been around for ~ 2 years or longer now.. however that concept, if you cut the picture at the roof line, just before it slopes back it looks hot.. ad in the back end, and it looks like someone pulled their ideas from a modern plastic shopping cart .

The car is simply a concept for design purposes and is not intended to make it to production. The engine design is of some interest but you need more details like hp and torque figures before it can really grab my attention.

It's WAAAAAAAAAAAY too outlandish to ever be produced.

I think the back end looks like it's sticking it's tounge out at you.

I wouldn't buy it.

I think it looks great because a concept like that represents that the next rotary car should have flow similar to the 3rd gen much different than the Rx-Evolv concept and Rx-8 which resulted!

to outlandish for sure , but it has the single most important part of all fabulous sports car designs nailed in my opinion, wheels that look like they dominate the car. Tone down the body lines on that thing and I'd buy it

enough with the concepts that will never be put into production.

What continues to shock me is the "news" of the 16X. I originally heard about it three or four years ago at the International Auto Show (a very small bit of it comes to Ottawa yearly). When the Mazda rep told me about a 2-rotor 1.6L rotary in the works that had increased torque, I practically laughed in his face. At the time it seemed stupid that Mazda would make that move since the RENESIS was like a year or two old at that point. For them to widen the rotor housings and/or change the footprint of the trochoid curve just seemed illogical, since all mazda rotaries are made in one plant and hand assembled... The retooling costs for major changes in the width of the rotors and/or shape of the trochoid and size of the rotors is just mind boggling. Much easier and cheaper for them to play with port shape/location and construction materials than to retool. Heck 3-rotor engines would be more likely to come out, or some sort of super- or turbo-assisted engines...

But the more I hear about it, the more I think that it may not be rumor after all. I can't wait to see it - the engine that is. The concept is cool and all, but I have no doubt that not even a third of the lines on that concept will ever make it to production. Personally I'd drive one. At least the concept demonstrates a lean towards a sports/performance concept instead of a "Hey, it's got 4 seats so it's 'practical' for a sports car" concept. You couldn't put seats in there, heck you could barely put a 24 of Keiths in the hatch area by the looks of it. But who cares about your cargo space if you've got some sort of "torquey" 1.6L rotary that looks like it's the evil demi-god of wind and storm?

Everyone thought the Enzo was outlandish when they designed it.

Can't wait for a Boosted 16X (or whatever the final name is). 16C or 16D.
