Lost Vehicle Registration
I decided to post here since most of you are familiar with Canadian vehicle policies, rules and regulations.
I have lost my original vehicle permit today. I was unable to register the vehicle in my name yet. I have a photocopy of the original, and a bill of sale from the dealership. The permit was a Quebec permit, I live in Ontario.
1. Will it be a hassle for me to replace it?
2. Should I report it lost? Is there a potential problem that can occur if someone uses it?

I have a photocopy. Will that suffice?
I mean, the only way to get an original is to call up the Ministry of Transportation for Quebec and ask them I suppose. Then maybe they'll send it to the dealership I bought the car from, they'll have to put on the back that they transfered the car to me, and then mail it to me. I hope I really don't have to do this. I already am going to have to go a week without driving the car.

I don't think the MTO can do anything for you since it was not registered in the province previously. Your best bet is to have the Quebec dealer get you a reprint from Quebec.
That said, there is no harm in calling the MTO to see if anything can be done. But act quickly since you are in a precarious position at the moment.
Let us know how it works out.

If for example when u moved from Quebec to Toronto and you have like a toronto vehicle registration....they should have it in their system and getting a new one wouldt be any problem just say like u lost it and like a normal ontario drivers license would suffice......
but i think if u dont have any of those u might have to go back to quebec and sort it out

I would say your best bet would be to contact the dealer that you bought the car from. They should be able to get you a reprint of the ownership because technically the car is still theirs if they didn't transfer it into your name. I always thought that the dealers had to transfer the vehicles into the dealership ownership when they took them in.... could just be here in Ontario though. I've gone through pretty much every other registration misshap but not this.

I'll keep you guys informed. Yea, it was a weird thing. I had all the documents in the envelope. I went to the MTO to try and get a temp permit so that I could get the car its safety and emissions. They said since it came from Quebec I needed it to pass Ontario's safety laws, so it was "unfit" by their standards. I put the paper in the envelope, went home, dumped all the papers on the table, and it was gone
There is a number I can call for registration not in my name, I surely hope I don't have to drive to Quebec and be there in person for this.

the ownership for my car was lost before it was in my name, you need a signed affidavit from the registered owner (no clue if thats spelled right lol)
so get the dealership to get the ownership reprinted and mail it to you or get them to send yhou a letter stating they sign over all ownership of the car to you

There must be a similar mechanism for getting a replacement in Quebec as there is in Ontario. The dealer should be willing to oblige since most usually attend at the ministry regularily.
OP, if you find you need an affidavit drafted and/or commissioned pm me and I'll do it for you for free.

Today I called the dealership that I got the car from and asked them to go to their ministry of transportation and request a new vehicle permit. They will mail me that one when they get it. I hope they can get it.
The girl at the counter remembers me, I see her a lot down there. She knows I lost my registration, she was the one I dealt with and who saw it. I'm sure if it comes down to someone having to take my word, I'll go back to her.
And thanks Scrappy for the offer. Very friendly of you. And it was at the MTO at Market Lane. In case you pass by there one day and see a registration flying about

i was actually kind shocked at how easy it is to get the registration, my paper just said " I (buddy's name) sign over all ownership of (my car and VIN) to my name and got him to sign it and brought it to the ministry, thats all they said they needed rather than getting that old man to go into town to the mto
i go there often though the old ladies all remember me

Depends on the licencing office people. I've had this happen to me. As long as you can provide a paper trail (ie. reciepts from each sale with all vehicle info on them including the VIN # going back to the owner who's name the vehicle is still registered to) they will sometimes let it go through. Some offices won't though because they want the tax money from each individual sale. Damn government gets in the way. I've gotten lucky I guess with mine.
That situation has happened to me twice.
