ON Insurance Changes?

Dear Righty,

Effective September 1st, 2010 coverage under the Auto Insurance policy will change due to automobile reforms introduced by the Ontario government.

These changes will take effect when your policy come up for renewal and provides you with more choice and flexibility when purchasing you automobile coverage.

The letter I got said they were going to make it more affordable... Do I trust insurance?? No so yes I feel rates are likely to increase but I will be 25 this year, and should have a clear record, so it will have to increase a lot!

I just got my new paperwork and with two cars, 84 RX-7 and 02 Sunfire, both with full coverage I'm paying $284/month. I'm 25 with a clear record, although I just turned and the paperwork was printed before my b-day, so it may not be reflecting that change yet.

To answer you question, you mean we weren't being raped before? Wow, I don't know what I was crying about then.

I was thinking the same thing...
You two need to meet up, throw down and get over yourselves... every other thread is you two bickering.

Then you can buy each other waters, from Toronto and London respectively.

It doesn't matter how much the beer is, at the end of the night I'm still going home broke.

Considering I'm a 25 year old truck driver with more experience under my belt than a lot of people twice my age, and that has no bearing on my insurance is what I find ridiculous. I mean I spent $3500 to learn to drive one of the largest vehicles on the road, I drive an average of 5K km per week, in any weather and I get nothing for that from the insurance companies. When I was calling for quotes, I told the lady at one company I had an A license and she didn't even know what that was, so I had to say G. WTF!?!?

If your policy renewed before Sept. 1 then you are renewed under the old regulations (seems obvious, but I asked my insurance company to be sure).

My policy renewed at the end of August, and even so (under the old regulations) the insurance on my '88 increased by $95 per year and my '93 by $144.

My insurance went up this year for the first time after having gone down every year since I've owned the RX-7. This is under the new regulations. I have no coverage on my car at all and this is annoying. Insurance is a ripoff as is many other things with this country but won't get into that hehe. The funny part is when I read the panflet, it seemed like insurance was going to go down but then I looked at the $ and was like um.... lol.

Sounds like classic Orwellian doublespeak. "We're going to @$$rape you, but your sphincter will have more choice and flexibility when we're done".

In other words, highlight some supposed benefit, to mask the fact you're being shook down, with the government's blessing.

strange, my insurance went down about 100 bucks a month for the exact same coverage. although the reason being that i sort of reached what they beleive is a milestone for fully lisenced driving years as well as being with the same company for a number of years. building trust i guess....now if only i could trust them. hahaha

You guys should look at the line items they(Insurance company) send you every year when you renew and compare the differences. some went up and some went down. In the end, they are in the business to make money so they just jack up my house insurance.

I got a letter stating that I requested a change, and my premiums dropped...but I have no idea why...I hope I'm not missing an appointment to bend over.

Unfortunately a number of your listed complaints have no bearing on your insurance rates for private passenger vehicles.

A list in descending order of the most "important" factors in what determines your auto insurance rates in Ontario.

1) Where you live.
By far this is the MOST important factor in determining your rates.

2) Tickets/Accidents.
Once you have acquired 3 minor tickets you are no longer eligable to be written as "new business" to a standard market insurer. (there are differnt rules for tickets when you are with your existing carrier). As for accidents, many insurance policies have an accident waiver included in them. This can be a godsend if you are involved in an at-fault loss, as your first is "forgiven" (with certain conditions attached) but this also locks you to your current company, as your accident waiver with Company X is not vaild with Company Y and you become a 0* driver to a new company.

3) Your age.
I list this third as once you have hit the age of 25 you are no longer put into tiered special classes based upon your age. After 25 you can start to accrue age discounts (when these kick in vary by company)

4) Number of years licensed.
Not a lot to write about this one.

5) What you drive.
Yes. This is actually the least important factor in determining your premium. Exceptions to this are when your vehicle's value exceeds (roughly) $75,000 (different companies have different cut-off limits to vehicle value).

There are plenty of other factors in your insurance rates (how far you drive to work, do you have an alarm system? and many others), but those are the top 5 determining factors in auto insurance in Ontario.
