it's very easy to do yourself. I imported a truck from ebay motors in Ohio. Check out http://www.riv.ca/ , it's the most important part of the importation. From there all the resources you need can be found. From there also make sure your vehicle is on the admissible vehicle list. All you have to know is basically:
A) You need to fax a copy of the title to the US border patrol (minimum 3 week days early), along with a statement that you plan to permanently export the vehicle from the US.
B) You need to cross at the Queenston-Lewiston bridge, about 40K north of the Peace Bridge. When you get there, you need to notify them of what you're doing, they'll give you a form to fill out, including VIN, manufacturing date, etc. You also need to pay GST, Air conditioning tax, and possibly Duty unless it was manufactured in NA. Now you're in Canada legally, but you have 45 days to comply with federal inspection.
C) Before you go to register your vehicle in Ontario, you need the following:
-Recall clearance letter (if you are buying from a dealer, have them write you up a letter on letterhead stating that there are no outstanding recalls to be done, otherwise there is only 1 place in Ontario that's authorized to do it, and the raping crooks charge $250 for it!!!)
-Federal inspection (different from provincial "safety") Done at Canadian Tire, all they check is that it has daytime running lights, speedo shows KM/H as well as MPH, child seat anchor positions, a few other things...
-Obviously your regular provincial safety inspection, and proof of insurance, just like all Canadian vehicles.
It's not as intimidating as it seems, and it'll save you thousands to do it yourself. And all this is done by driving the vehicle over the border on it's own power, as long as there are temporary plates from the original state, and obviously that it's road-worthy. Good luck!
