Import Question: Storage For Cars Not 15 Years Old Yet

is it possible to have a car imported that is close to the 15 year mark and just leave it parked in your garage until it clears, then register it and get it plated?

I'm going to be importing an FD but....i'm feeling impatient (think kids around xmas time and thats pretty much the situation ), and would rather have it at home where i can start wrenching on it.

So rather than wait till march or so, is it posible to bring it in now for "off-road" purposes or storage, then plate it when the correct time comes?

Thanks

I've asked this same question a few times, and gotten resounding "no"s as answers. But storage i think can be arranged in japan for about 50$/mo. until it is legal.

i believe if you bring it into the country for "off-road" purposes now, the car will never be able to be an "on-road" vehicle.

It has to be 15 years old before it can land on Canadian soil.
If you register it as a race car you must be a professional rocognized racing organization and you can never register the car for the roads.

They wont even allow it across the border. I forget WHICH jdm import site I read it at, probably jdmcars.ca, but they (or whoever) said they would store it for a few months free of charge across the border in the USA.

I understand Canada to USA is VERY easy, reason being that our safety standards blow theirs away by a large margin.

Here's a rough estimate if you were to use jdmcars.ca $1800 importer fee $1500 for shipping. 6.1% import duty.

f.ing...15 year rule sucks the big one...if I want a certain model car...I want if now I don't want to have to wait 15 years...chances are by then I will want something else...and I could have enjoyed that other car for at least 15 years longer...

yeah
we should write a bigass petition and get a whole bunch of collectors, enthusiasts and forum members from across canada to sign it and petition for it to be changed somehow.

is it a DOT regulation or a HTA law?

Tell me about it. I'd prefer a TVR Griff 500 (5L) but due to age and such, I can only import a 4.0 or a 4.3

The new car economy has really taken a nose dive since high power cars have become available at a similar premium.

I can imagine them Adding rules to make them more stringent, but its unlikely they will change them.

non, the less, i don't think the 25 year rule effects that market substantially. The people who are buying these cars are unlikely to go out and buy a new WRX STi or a new carrera or whatever the case may be.

They're usually collectors with a specific car in mind, or we go overseas because the car we want is unaffordable here anyhow (and is already used do it doen't impact the manufacturer, if anything they make money off parts sales).

I don't think they will change it though. If they do, i'm sure some millionaire ferrari collector or the hotrod guys will get them to stop.

Some importing companies are offering free storage in Japan if you buy the car before it's legal.
