I need a Rebuild
Hey Guys.....
My fd has no compression in the rear rotor so i gotta get it rebuilt............i live in Calgary so the obvious choice was to go to Adam at RX7 Specialties.....he quote me 7000 bucks to do a complete rebuild with 2 new rotors and 2 new housings aswell as street porting the engine..........However after reading some of the posts on here i am second guessing going to Adam's shop although i am not sure of any other alternatives.
I previously got RX7 Specialties to install a cold air intake, dp,res pipe, racing beat exhaust, fuel pump, turbo time, power fc w/commander.............it cost me about 5000 bucks for that list of mods......
In my opinion Adam is a pretty good guy and seems to know what he is doin...my only concern is that he might be a little overpriced......
i wanna here everyone's opinion on his work and pricing and if your deadset against him where should i go to get the engine rebuilt......thx

7000 for an fd rebuild would prolly just cut a profit. Theres alot of stuff to mess around with, and from the shops I've been to, 8-10k is in the realm of taking out, rebuilding, and installing it back in.

And, um, how do you know you need new rotors/housings? Has it been torn down already? And why 3mm seals?
This could get ugly I'll try and avoid that.
I would say don't us Adam. Do a search for the many reasons. Go to the Canadian section of www.teamfc3s.org/forum and post the same question, the guy's over there may have an alternative for you.
If you choose to use Adam, be there for the build. If you pay for new housings make sure they are actually new, measure them yourselves. Do your research on porting and make sure his porting is up to the task. Use stock seals don't go anywhere near 3mm seals ESSPECIALLY anything made by Adam, Rotary Aviation etc etc, those seals are junk. Ask about seals over on teamfc3s there is now a Mazdaspeed competition seal set available, they're incredible and come right from Mazda no third party bullshit. Watch Adam when he builds it, does he check tolerances on side seals corner seals. Does he measure end play?
No matter who builds your motor do your own research. Don't be fooled by slick salesmanship and a good price, you might not get what you pay for in the end.

To rebuild a shortblock the cost should be the same for all motors, you do the same stuff for all of them. People just feel the need to charge people with FD's more because "they have it". I have no clue what taking a FD motor out intales, but the rebuild cost shoudl be the same.

no the engine hasnt been torn down yet and i guess the new rotors and housings are assuming the worst case senario........but the car only has 65,000 original kms on it.......
i am assuming that the 3mm seals are used due to strength over the 2mm

I think you were spotted on beyond.ca.
I agree, do your research, ask for referrals, ask if you can see your engine through the stages of porting and assembly. Can you take pictures?? Can you take pics and be there for the dissambly? I had no issue with co-operation in these areas.
2mm vs 3mm is an endless battle. Those who believe on either side will defent it to the death. I run 3mm (my SE came stock with 3mm) and i watched neil pound his s/c 12a on 3mm seals while running reg gas and detonating and it held together. Max has run stock 2mm mazda seals with his huge *** turbo and swears by them. Like TD07 said, do your own research and make up your oen mind, there are several forums and lots to search. Remember this is "your" engine going in "your" car and it's gonna strip "your" wallet, do your homework and make "your" decision. This is also the time to decide on porting, turbo's, etc.....I'm sure Max, Chris, Adam and all will concur that if you're gonna pass the stock threshold then a standalone is a must (wish I had the talent here, gonna have to learn some day). Speaking of porting, sure can't beat the sound of a bridge (no offense Adam, but I only have a vid of Max's bridge, but you're all friends to me). http://media.putfile.com/bridged-rotary-54

Adam built me an engine about 3 years ago or so. Its a NA 13B for an S4. He used turbo housings, lightweight rotors, better seals (2mm, double spring was what I was told) and he street ported it for me. While it was out they replaced the clutch and repaired an engine mount. This all cost me $4100 installed, and they did it all in one day. I did stick around for awhile to watch, not because I don't trust them, I just wanted lots of pictures. I checked in every hour or so to watch, and they had no problem with that. The engine came with a 1 year warranty. I did have an issue with it (it was something to do with the intake housing leaking coolant I think) and they stood behind it, repaired it free, no problem.
The engine has about 50 000 Km on it now and its still strong, even after a couple of race days for the Mazda sport compact challenge a couple of years ago. I'm very happy with it and I recommend them for a rebuild. You can tell I'm not exactly a rotary engine wizard, but I am an ordinary guy off the street who just wants to keep my 7 running the best I can. My car is a daily driver and it's my only means of transportation.
