Hey guys, can ya help me out?

Hello fellow rotorheads, so my aunt has an 85 gsl-se which she says i can have once I'm done college. The car is in great condition. The thing is, I cant find much information about the motor. Its a 13b re-egi. i was just wondering if you guys could tell me about some of the pros and cons of the engine, and just things i should know about it.

Thanks alot everybody!

No offence..But Seriously.Start with GOOGLE.
you would get to know how the engine operates.
Since the car is a "First Gen",then Go to the "first gen archives" section of this Forum and grab a coffee and your reading glasses and Hit the Threads.Read up on what you can expect the car to do.
The First gen Specific section will inform you of problems and solutions by owners of cars like yours. Those sections are "Gold"..lots of info,at your fingertips.
I started 6 years ago with a Car I didn't have a CLUE about!.now I am not a "Guru" in knowledge on an Rx7,But I know what is what, and can fix it...I learned that all on THIS Forum.
.......
at least you got the Electronic Fuel injected engine..as the 85 was the first year of EFI or EGI.(in First gens). If you got the carburated version,it is a little more trickier to maintain.(the EFI engine is simple to Diagnose).
Good Luck,Welcome, and you have come to the Right Place as far as Rx7's are concerned..No other Website will tell you as much as you need to know that right here!
Cheers Dave/STYX!~

Are you trying to find out specifics of the 13B RE-EGI, or about rotary engines in generals?

Head over to the 1st gen forum and have a read through the FAQ sticky threads. That's a great place to start for basic information.

If you are serious about working on the car yourself, pick up the Haynes manual (eBay) or the Factory Service Manual (1st gen FAQ) and just read it...

Just a correction Misterstyx, the EFI was introduced in the 84 model GSL-SE's, and the carbureted 12A's are also very simple to work on.

haha thanks alot guys. i have definitely been reading the 1st gen forums. practically everyday over the past few months! im learning more then my mind can handle, but i was wondering more about the motor itself. i know how a rotary works, i was just wondering if it was easier to work on a FI engine, is it more reliable then a carb? and what are some things I MUST know while owning an rx7.

How about where to take it when you need an expert? See the List of Canadian Rotary Shops

Congrats, a GSL-SE is a sweet 7, and extra sweet if it's avoided the rust ahead and behind the rear wheels.

I'd say FI is way easier than carbs (and I'm old enough to have had a few carbed cars - don't miss them) - and usually less likely to give trouble. Assuming it's running well now, your main concern should be to make sure the coolant's changed for fresh (should be done every few years, at least, but few do), make sure coolant hoses are in good shape, and check the condition of the rat's nest of vacuum hoses; if brittle or cracking, replacing them before vacuum leaks develop helps head off an assortment of problems. Good quality dino oil in the engine, and perhaps change the tranny oil to a good synth (I like Redline MT90). Diff oil might merit a check and change as well. iirc, those cars still ran a distributor (dizzy), so checking the cap and rotor is a good idea, and possibly check the condition of the plug wires - again, they deteriorate with age, but few replace them.

Then enjoy.

Carburetors are nothing but semi-controlled fuel leaks into the manifold and are far more finicky than fuel injection. Once you get over the hurdle of all those old muscle car guys telling you EFI is hard, you'll find it is actually pretty simple. Not much to go wrong other than a few sensors and injectors.

What can make these cars (or any older vehicle really) annoying to work on is the emissions system which has about a zillion places for vacuum leaks to form. This is true on the carbureted engines as well as EFI.
