Unhappy Help: My Rex Won't Start

Okay....I have a 1st gen and I just installed an S5 TII in it....but wired it as an 88 TII. I tried to start it for the first time last night...but could not. I am not getting any ground pulse in the coils.....I am getting power but no pulse.....
I changed the coils and also the computer......still no start.....

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ryad

Check the CAS wiring, and verify that the ECU is getting a signal from the CAS.

if it is, check the outputs on the ECU and see why the coil isn't getting the signal.

The CAS is good. Also the computer is getting a signal from the CAS. I back fed the comuter and the computer is getting all input signals. All the ECU pins are also correct. I am thinking that I need a computer. Am I missing any thing.

Thanks,
Ryad.
p.s.
My injectors are also not pulsing......

Check your EGI fuse?

So you are using S4 electronics? You have the resistor pack in there? That will cause the injectors not fire.

Don't have the resistor pack wired in. Also don't have the EGI fuse wired in.....The fuel pump (an inline MSD pump) is wired directly into the first gen harness....with no relay. I have a manual switch wired in in case of flooding.

Ryad,

Please clarify...you're using an S5 TII short or long block. S4 or S5 intake, oil metering pump? 88 wiring - you mean the harness and S4 computer? You replaced computers, both S4 (I presume because of the wiring)? Did you remember the ground under the intake manifold?

The injector (solenoid) resistor was not present in some later S4's (1988 models). Use injectors suited for the computer you're running (N***) and resistor if applicable. Having said this, it looks like your problem is more with ignition.

If using S5 computer, it looks for an OMP to be hooked up. Check for trouble codes. It won't tell you much, but will tell if something obvious is missing or not hooked up (the list is very short, though).

Don't miss the basic stuff - it's easy to overlook. Good luck.

Thanks for the input.....
I am using an S5 TII long block. I have locked the MOp in 1/2 position and will be using 2 stroke oil in my gas to make up the difference. i have not connected the MOP to the computer...there is alot of stuff not connected...in fact I am only using about 1/2 the pins on the computer.....(took out alot of stuff, especially those that relate to emmissions)

The wiring and computer is from an 88...the actual computer is a N332, which is from and 87 TII...., but the 87 and 88 computers are interchangable. The injectors from the S5 are high impedience, so I am not using the resistor pack as used in the earlier 88 models....

On the S5 there are two grounds on the solonoid rack.....one of which I know relate to the injectors....Since I removed the solonid rack, I bolted these two grounds to the bell housing.......IS this the grounds under the intake manifold?

The S5 have two TPSs and the S4 has one TPS and an 'electronic idle screw' (potensheometer....can't spell it)...........So I wired one TPS, diconnected the TPS used at idle and wired a potensheometer from an S4...

Here's my progress todate:
I changed the computer again....but I am not getting any reference voltage out of the computer....usually you would get a reference output, back to the sensors.....
I think I should since the ECU has one power source and one and the ECu is grounded......
I am also not getting any ground pulse for the injectors and no pulse for the coils.....

Well tomorrow is another day.......thanks for everyone help so far.......hoping to get the car started and running within the next few days....if anyone have any more ideas let me know........will post more updates tomorrow...

Thanks,
Ryad.

There should be a ground bolted to one of the threads that used to hold the vacuum lines/solenoid rack. Another ground is where you have the starter long bolt and nut through the engine and bellhousing, lower driver's side. Make sure you also have a wire between the engine and chassis. Check the FSM again and make sure the ground wires at the computer are grounded. Check for continuity between all injector and coil/igniter wires to the computer to the right pins using long wires attached to a multimeter. You may have switched something.

Good luck.

Is your computer bolted into the car? I had problems until I actually grounded the computer body to the chassis.

Well it's 6:20 am and I just got home.......It's ALIVE...I got my Rex started at 4:30 this morning......Thanks for everyone's help.......I rechecked the wiring and realized that I was missing a 12 volr source for the computer.....pin #3i. The computer gets 2 power sources, not only ignition.....Pin #3i powers almost everything on the rats nest, the fuel pump relay and resistor as well as other stuff that I eliminated.....so it was easy for me to overlook....

Just to clairify the MOP....I am using an S4 MOP...not the S5.....

I still have to set up and tune the car....but at least it starts.....

Thanks,
Ryad.
