take off the black ring that's around where the mast comes out of that will allow you
to remove the mast, then just get a new one from the dealer and while the car and on
stereo is on feed the new mast in and when the white plastic rack gear of the new mast
bottoms out have someone turn off the stereo the motor will pull the new mast in.
only problem with doing this is you have to push the rack gear in the same way as the
old one pulled out.
I have done this a couple times and it will work, but most of the ones I have done
I have removed the whole thing from the car taken it apart and replaced the mast.
I think the mast is about 25 or 30 from the dealer, but that in Canada prices seem to be
higher in every other country.

I think i paid about 50 for a new mast last year. you'll want to remove the whole assembly because you'll want to re-lube all the disks inside the motor. It's pretty gummy, and that's probably 90% of your problem.
