Your not the only one doing solo 1 this year , hehe... saturday was pretty fun, aside from having the coolant reservior tank blow up in my face... i noticed two things that stood out to me in this 1st solo 1 event. (1) you NEED r-compound tires to be competitive (2) the pts system rly sucks , you got a 87 t2 with springs and sway bars and exhuast going up against a C6, m-roadster with full exhuast and slicks, cobra svt mustangs... the second i saw what class i was in all i was saying to myself (only here for expirience)

looks fun, i would love to start doing this

anyone know what classification differences there are being NA? is the type of aspiration a big factor with the points system?

R compounds yes... classifying... well u know James? He was the one with the black 89 Turbo II. He won SGT3 on Sunday's event, against a SVT mustang, BMW M roadster and the bunch.

It's all about prep and making sure you do mods that make a dramatic change. If you look at the rule book closely and the points classification yuo will notice that there is no difference between a 200 dollar KYB AGX shock, versus a Penske custom valved remote reservior shock. So what you need to do is reinstall all those worthless mods such as airpump, or end links, or whatever and focus on mods that will dramatically change the car. I claimed a lightened flywheel since I have a FD flywheel on, it is 18 lbs, the rule book doesn't say what min weight is, so i'm looking for a 9.9 lbs flywheel.

I'm maxed at 79.9% for GT1. Best time on Fabi track was a 78.418. I think I could've gotten 77.3XX if I didn't miss a 2nd to 3rd shift twice on a type 1 corner exit. I was flustered. With a 77 and change, I'm 3 seconds a lap slower than the 3rd place car. The top 3 places in GT1 are almost set in stone and are faster than most of the SGT3, SGT2, SGT1. Can I get 3 seconds? I think i can. I need race pads for brakes, maximize my tire size (you can ram a 245/45/16 tire on the front, and a 275/40/16 tire in the rear). The green camaro has got 275 tires all around. That and this is my first season so i have no idea what the race line is around the course compared to people who have been diong it 10+ years, i brake way too early for the turn immediately after the straightaway, I can make up a second or two there if I had confidence in the brakes. My clutch was starting to go, it started to slip at 4000 rpm at high boost, so that maybe 1/2 second there.

The rx7 turboIIs will shine in the fabi track, TMP, and Mosport DDT. It will however get eaten alive in the shannonville pro, mosport big track.

Cheers, again I think you understand whats needed to win in Solo 1 based on your comments. In Solo 1 they assume that if you make any modification to your car you are going to the max allowed (money no object) in that area. It is interesting in what you are saying about your Turbo II and your competitiveness at different tracks. I have been Solo and road racing for over 20 years. I held the Solo 1 Track record at Shannonville Nelson track for over 3 years, it was so long ago that Nelson was the only track there and your comments are from a different perpective than mine but I understand what you are saying. I think I can help you change your mind.

I do very well at Shannonville with my stock engined N/A RX7 and have gotten it down to a 1:17.8 on Pro track. What I have found was that there are 2 areas that really effect the car at Shannonville. The first area is the hairpin coming on to the front straight on Fabi. The gear ratios and spacings are a little off in second to third as second is to high and bogs the car down a bit and by the time it pulls itself out of the rpm hole you have lost a ton of distance to the v8 cars. I learned to really, really late apex the hairpin and to slip the clutch on the sharp turn on entry to get the rpm up enough to accelerate out really hard. Almost like a standing start at 20 mph. This is an old Honda Michelin trick and really works well. It abuses the clutch like he!! but is worth it when you need the grunt and acceleration.

The second area is the last left right combo coming on to the front straight. Sacrifice the left exit (out to the middle of the track at the most) and keep squeezing the apex on the right hand 180 degree earlier and earlier until you can exit the corner on full throttle until you sweep out to the wall without having to steer out to it.

Personally I find that the cars are giant killers at Mosport on the big track. The cars have really good frontal area and the gear spacings are less of an issue on the big track. Mosport is actually a momentum track. HP helps a ton but you can do very well by being smooth and brave. I have seen almost stock Turbo II's do a 1:37 at Mosport on the big track and with some help I am certain that you can get there for a lap or 2. As well the Mosport big track is a ton easier on the car than Shannonville or the DDT. Give me a call some day and I can guide you around the lines at Mosport and Shannonville. I only have about 200 hours at Mosport and 100 at Shannonville.

By the way I would be willing to help anyone starting out in Solo 1 with some coaching. I would really like to see all of you guys have fun and kick some butt.

yup. I agree with all your comments. It's important to maxmize all of the type 1 corners (which are corners leading to straiaways). I also agree with the money is no object issue too. I'm mostly in it for the fun. I'm pretty sure I won't be winning novice championship this year as a 2003 Cobra SVT mustang tuned by Shawn Hyland Motorsports with a blower and 500 HP is winning SGT1. A win = 100 rookie points and he won both sat and sun. I'm in 8th place i think.

Mind you my total cost right now is 6500 for my car, 3000 and change for mods and 600 for entrance fees. Not 50,000 for car, 15,000 to shawn hyland and 600 for entrance fees.
