Dirt bags...

Just venting....some dirt bags lifted the ownership and registration out of my DD last night. Grrr. Off to the MTO to pay *again* for a new piece of paper and then to shop around online for some hi-def security cameras for the driveway.

you know you don't have to keep the original ownership in the car right? you can keep a photocopy of the ownership. I keep all my ownerships at home and only leave photocopies in the car.

Sorry to question your knowledge on this..but has this statement been proven? I only question it because I don't want my wife to have to deal with some pissed off cop saying that it's unacceptable if/when she gets pulled over.

Police said that they are likely using it to sell a similar car. They didn't touch the RAV 4 parked beside it which had the portable GPS and Sat radio sitting in the glove box. They just took the ownership.

I worked at a dealership, and we usually did this for people. The insurance slip has to be the original, but you only need proof of ownership, not the actual ownership, from my understanding. Our dealership recommended it in case your vehicle was stolen, since they could through a scribble on the back and go transfer the title while your on vacation, and have a proper paper trail.

Your insurance slip does not have to be an original.

I'm a broker and I only keep a photocopy of mine in the car with me. I've been pulled over many times (too many) and not had any problems.

Weird. In Nova Scotia they specifically tell you not to keep your ownership in the car. You are just supposed to have your registration and your insurance card.

Lol funny, (not your situation G-man), but I was talking with a friend of mine today who questioned why I keep my ownership and insurance card in my wallet instead of the glove box. Now if only I could find where I put my wallet last...

Sounds like you've put this theory to the test. Thanks for the input.

I had a cop advise me once (during a traffic stop) to NOT keep the ownership and insurance originals in the car.

I keep all my ownership's, and insurance slips in my wallet, that way they're not in the car(s), but always with me when I'm driving. I also cover up the V.I.N. on the cars with programmable keys to prevent fake keys/keyfobs from being made.

That's pretty much every car.

I lost the keys to my '85 FB a few years ago, called the dealer and gave them the vin and they gave me the key code, then i got a new key made at a locksmith. I was never asked for the ownership or any sort of proof that I even had the car.
