Chronicles of my Turbo Swap - Part 1

For the last little while, I been working on an S4 TII swap into my 1985 GSL.

The plan was a simple drop in and plug and play. Whatever performance it makes, it makes. The goal to start was to just get it in, working and driving.

Heres a few of parts laid out. I stripped the motor down to a shortblock originally and clean and washed everything. All the manifolds, parts and turbo were disassembled, inspected, cleaned and reassembled. The engine itself has about 60,000kns on a rebuild. Im not sure who rebuilt it, but it a 2mm motor with excellent compression

Heres a photo of the turbo in a 75% assembled state. I took the compressor housing and wastegate off to clean and inspect. I got carried away. The turbo is in great condition otherwise. However, when I went to remove the turbine to port the wastegate, I noticed a snapped bolt, so I left it alone as to not disturb the seal.

Since this is going into an FB, a new oil pan and front cover is required. You can choose to use an SE front cover, or a 12A front cover. I used an old 12A front cover that was lying around. Since the oil drains into the front cover, a bung was required to drain the oil. Due to lack of tools, time and sleep, I used what I could find and drilled and tapped for a 5/8 fitting. Position and quality are not the best, but Im confidant it works.

This is my S4 Manifold with twin scroll delete. Its been professionally cleaned, inspected and welded. My other S4 manifold had a common crack in the casting.

This is the N/A Flywheel. This is significant because due to budget restraints, I am unable to install the TII transmission until a later time. Im confidant the FB transmission will hold the output of this turbo motor, until a time is reached I can install the TII transmission.

13B GSL-SE Oil Pan I've been hoarding for just such an occasion. This one has seen many a 13B into FB swap.

This is my 2 1/2" Greddy downpipe. On a TII it would go from the turbo to the main cat. This works well for me because, since I couldn't get the wastegate ported, It will give me better control to the amount of boost I have. In theory. Im going to install a 3" downpipe back exhaust to better facilitate future upgrades.

Somewhat assembled shortblock

Here the lower intake, turbocharger and lines, as well as fuel rails and injectors were installed. I'm waiting on the EMS and some block-off plates to complete the install. Im also waiting on an impact gun to install the 12A front cover.

Plans for the future are to complete the install with a Wolf 3D or Haltech E6K engine management. The OMP has been blocked off, as well as injectors so this will be a straight premix car. Fuel will be supplied by a Walbro 255lph external fuel pump that I've been hoarding for years.

More pictures will follow in Part 2, which will show in detail the changing of the front cover.

Thanks to Davey and Max for all the parts so far.

I will have much more detial in following threads, as this is my first go.
