Certified Class A technician
Hey guys, just wanted to brag a bit.... I passed my provincial and inter provincial Class A technician license just last week!
I have never done any apprenticeship hours or taken any mechanics courses. All hands on experience, I just went and challenged the exam.
Also if your wondering, I'm currently working for a place in Etobicoke called RMP Motors (weird eh). We specialize in BMW, VW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Ferrari, but pretty much anything that comes through the door we'll work on.
It's an abosolute pleasure to work for Rocco (the owner), he treats every vehicle like its his own and keeps an amazingly clean shop. He sponsers many BMW forums and has the best reputation going.
Check out the website www.rmpmotors.com
Anyways, just thought I'd let you guys know whats up.
Joe

Congrats Joe! I was out with Jay last Saturday night and soon as he said you'd found work in a west end shop that deals with racecars I knew it was RMP, saw their ad at CASC and applied myself! lol Anyways, great to hear your comfortable there. Catch up soon. Cheers!

Thanks guys,
Jason, next time I'm out your direction I'll have to give you a shout!
Charn, Rocco himself owns an early 90's Ferrari 348 and a 2003 Maserati Gransport. He knows them very well. Its clear once working on them why they cost what they do.

Great job Joe and good work getting the Class A.
Working with Rocco, we should see you out at the track a bit more helping him with his crazy homebuilt TR8.
That car is just nuts. Its like a roller skate with a Hemi, lol. It should appeal to your sense of whimsy.

Wow, congrats buddy!!!
I have a quick question. Is it possible for a person (such as myself) who has absolutely no experience on working with cars and fixing them, but still allowed to work in a garage? I really want to become an auto-mechanic, but like yourself, I do not want to go to school for it, I want to just go and get hands-on experience. Do you think a shop will be willing to take me in and teach/train me - keeping in mind that I have absolute no experience?

I will second Buggy's post, as a graduate of the apprenticeship program myself. Not only all the points that he mentioned, but also along the way you are much more likely to get paid appropriately for your time and efforts if you are a 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year etc. apprentice, as opposed to someone who is just hired as a shop-hand.
Not to mention, if you are working at a shop and competing with another training mechanic who is doing the college, and registered as an apprentice, who do you think is more likely to get the time given to teach them about a job?

hmmm...just another question, though this might make me sound really dumb, but I can't be an apprentice while going to full-time university, right? I know I can probably find this online...haha, I guess I just feel like asking people who had experience with apprenticeship, since I know nothing about it, and sometimes asking people who has experience it is better than reading it from the website.
