Cool Calgary rx7's: New kid on the block

Hey there Calgary guys. I just bought a 88 SE in September, and aside from putting some winter tires on it, I haven't done anything. The car is mechanically immaculate, but it does have some hail damage and a dented fender which need to be fixed in the spring.

If you would lend me some on your experience I would be grateful. Is there a good rotary mechanic in Calgary? Where is the best place to buy performance upgrades? Know of a good body shop where I can get a good deal?

I'm looking for put on an intake, mufflers, rims and a tint job by the end of next summer. Is there a good rims store in Calgary? Or is it best to buy the performace parts/rims online?

Any general advice would also be appreciated. Thanks guys,

welcome aboard nima.. There is a really reasonable bodyshop called Good deal autobody, they do good work for reasonable cost...If you want to venture outside the city a bit, I have a friend east of okotoks that does excellent bodywork..
For performance stuff, the guys at speedville on Blackfoot and manitou road seem pretty good, and get this, they actually call you back!!!
I haven't had much luck with the others, Mopac has a good selection of general performance items and "sometimes" ok pricing, but be prepared for rotary ignorance, and some cheap remarks, but otherwise ok... Their main business is v-8 cars, so that's what they pretend to know..
Make a point of coming to the next meet, the guys on here are getting fairly knowledgable and can probably steer you in the right direction for performance mods and what gives the best bang for the buck..
I am not sure if I have ever seen your car, but recently I have been in a flurry of fc's on the roads..
The cars I have seen in the past 2 days..
86-88:
1 primered and yellow ???? its an FC, not sure what model though, looks beat. 14 st and kensington road
2 red Gxl's 16 th ave and barlow right beside each other..
1 black TII 52nd st and 32nd broken antenna, one muffler tip missing
1 white GX mcleod and glenmore
1 blue gx 52nd and marlborough dr ne
1 10 ae 16th and deerfoot, rims in wrong direction.. tires looked brand new..
89+
Toronado silver GXL 5st sw and 11th ave
Black Gx 52nd street and temple drive
blue GX 52nd street and temple, parked 4 cars down from the black one
red gxl glenmore and barlow se
white gxl with gold trim rims and nose bra, peigan and 36st

Some of these cars I saw within a minute of each other, winter comes and I see the most FC's I have ever seen on the roads.. strange.. Who are these people, we need some RX-7 forum business cards..Max

I have a mind like an iron trap.. Especially when it comes to Rx-7's.. when its your favourite car, you tend to remember every one you see, especially when you hardly see them on the streets..
When I see one, I 'try' to catch up to it to see what model it is and if I know who is driving it, I thought the 10 ae was chris, but remembered he was driving an altima now, the red GXL's I thought was mikey, but he's in the centre of the universe right now, and the wings were different.. Max

Thanks for all that info there man, I'll print off a copy so I can refer to it later when I get some money and am to ready to start investing.
I will definitely come out to some of the meets, just not anytime soon, I had knee surgery and won't be able to drive (or walk for that matter) until the 4th of January.

One of my first priorities is rims though....I don't have lots to spend either. The 14 inchers on the SE look good, if only they were 15's....damn!

I will try, honestly, but these damn crutches are really cutting into my social life. Just wrote my last exam today and I'm going to try to get out tonight, but its a pain having your parents drive you to a party!

Hopefully seeing you all soon,

Add me to the club :)

Just bought a MINT.... and I do mean MINT 85 GSL.

I've never seen a 20 year old car look so good....even the fabric of the seats doesn't look like 2 years wear and tear nevermind 20!

Anyways, It's a nice car,...first one I've owned... my recently blown up 86 celica gts would've kicked it's *** all over the place, ... so would my old 85 corolla gts, but they are rusty as can be, and the rx-7, while not nearly as fast has a lot better lines, a lot more styling, and despite the speed, I like it just as much.

I don't intend on going crazy with mods... not my style.... I'm one of those guys that would rather see a model T ford mint, than hotrodded to hell and back.... so I'll be keeping the factory rims, wont be adding body kits etc etc.

I'm just going to keep it nice, pure, and hopefully original as possible.

My only plans are scrapping the Auto for a 5spd, throwing on a K&N, and making the exhaust capable of expelling the increased air flow.... nothing drastic, and easily reversible back to "original".

I'll get some decent pics of someday.... this is from the advertisement that caught my eye, coercing me to buy it.

Hope to see a few nice 1st gens around town soon .... only 1 so far.

here yah go. $400 for some FD rims in calgary with tires on them.

If I could get rid of my gold-ish silver rims I would be getting these right now.

Do you live up in edgmont by any chance? I think I bought some mud flaps from you a few years ago?

Welcome. Nice car too! I recently bought an '81 that is pretty close to mint. I'll admit I'm more of a purist with the Rx-7 since it looks so good stock but I did change my rims - the stock steelies were ugly.

Here's mine with better pics....

I spotted a nice-ish 84 today.... just headed out the door for beer when I hear this loud "brrrraaaaaaaapp" down the street.... some kid in a white 84 rex... does a U'ey at the end of the street and drives back up to get a better look at my ride.

He said it's the nicest looking rx-7 that old he's ever seen.

Oh, btw ... nice car

[edit]

Hey... btw.... is that close to or a factory color? I once saw a awesome rex years ago a very drak charcoal gray and have always loved that paintjob since.... yours reminds me a lot of it.
