Broke 3rd Gear at Mosport

Just came back from the track (Mosport) after breaking 3rd gear while downshifting before corner 9. This happened exactly 10 minutes before the end of the day so its like . Oh well, just gotta fix it and maybe put my torque brace back on and possibly a tranny brace...

Also, my intake temp sensor wires broke off in the morning so i spent a good portion of the morning trying to get it to work and not run pig rich.

Also, I think my wastegate is leaking...

For some reason I always break something when I go to Mosport.

Anyway, managed to do 1:36.8 after some advice on tire pressures from Al which was a 2 second improvement over previous times so the day was pretty good overall .

That's too bad. I guess it's a good time to drop some money on a race built trans. You are afterall putting down a ton of power.

Man of all the RX-7 transmission problems I had I luckily never had a 3rd gear issue!

Any sponsors/donations

Well its hard to say. The reason I say this is because my intake sensor was just barely working, I got it to read a resistance and then had a fixed air temp correction on my map so as long as there was a resistance on the sensor, it would give the same fuel regardless of the temp. It was running about 10.5 at start and then lean out to high 10's/low 11's once it got hotter.

Also, when the car got hotter, boost would drop. I had it set up to boost 16.5 PSi and it drops to 15.5-16 PSi at high RPM but once it warmed up it would boost to 15 PSi and drop to 13.5-14 PSi at high RPM. I suspect my wastegate is leaking and possibly the heat makes it worse? Reason I say that is because I still have an exhaust leak sound even after rewelding my turbo hotside that cracked.

I'm guessing I was around 350-360 rwhp once the car was up to temp.

I ordered one of those triumph AIT sensors. It came in today. If you want to try it you can since my car is still being painted.

Sorry to hear about the tranny. You need a hoist in your house to start wrenching on these track day mishaps yourself.

I ordered the triumph AIT sensor as well but it still hasn't come in yet. Which is ironic because if I had received it, I wouldn't have the AIT problem at Mosport lol.

Hehe thanks, fixing the tranny will probably take a bit so the sensor should come in before its done. I'm going to try putting it back in the stock location as well since heatsoak isn't as much of an issue with the sensor and see how it goes.

At our mere 270 rwhp the stock N/A transmissions last between 20 and 40 race minutes lol, I have 4 tranny's with the same broken parts!

Anyone know where I can get DIY info on rebuilding transmissions . I just realized this is something I can probably fix myself with time and patience.

You need some very specialty tools to rebuild this transmission. It is not for the faint of heart.

I think I just came up with a plan. I'll buy a JDM transmission from Tiger (yes I know the horror stories but I think its worth the gamble for $190 lol, plus I get the shorter 5th gear). If I'm lucky all gears will be ok which would be good enough for me. Then in the meantime, I can open up my busted tranny and see what I can do.

Look what I found

Oh and how are the intake temps with the intercooler like that? i dont see your hood being vented?

shouldn't have a problem with a tranny from tiger just a motor even tho i have bought several honda motors no issues

After full 30 minutes on the track at 16 PSi, the hottest intake temps I saw was 45*C. Could probably be better with a vented hood but once I add methanol it won't matter anyway.

I hope the transmission will be ok too.

Well I bought the transmission. I think I picked out a good one (I didn't want the clean ones that were ready to be sold). It was still connected to an engine which was completely stock as far as I can tell. Also, the clutch didn't look like it was abused at all and they even wanted to buy the clutch off me for $20 lol but I declined because I think I can sell it for more since its in good shape lol. It shifted ok as well. I found it kind of strange but apparently the clutches go with the trannies.

It was $249 with tax so hopefully when I put it in tomorrow its all good. I have a good feeling but I know I took a gamble so we will see ^_^
