for more accurate readings, such as compression build up during break it, you want to use the factory one if possible, or get something that will react quickly to each pulse...
i just wanna check the apex seals...
i'd do it manually like pulling one of the sparks out then cranking it to hear the "psst" sounds but i'm too inexperienced to try that..
maybe i'll just get a regular compression tester and try it. What readings should i be getting for the 3 pulses? Someone told me that above 100 is good and about 90 is dying... true?

There is variation among testers, but generally around 85 psi (on all faces)is the lowest you want to see. If you see more then 85 then your apex seals are all present and doing their job.
A fresh, healthy engine should get above 100 psi. These numbers are influenced by cranking speed, and atmospheric pressure. Other things like warm/cold engine, porting will influence it too.
If you just want to know whether your engine is on its way out or not, a non-mazda tester is fine.
