Anybody else hate stripping ? (paint)

Its been about a month now and i have been pushing it off more and more .... and im up now at 4:08 am looking at the damn hood and i just cant anymore

I bought chemical stripper for an aluminum t2 hood and boy was this thing ugly, it was painted with cans red which is now rust red because its faded and horrible looking over what was originally silver.

I brushed it on as the paint was peeling in sections already and didnt bother to scuff it up (my mistake) and one can of stripper has only done half a hood and hasn't even lifted the silver off yet. so now im driving around with a white convertible with a red and silver hood....

not to mention when i use this stuff i see unicorns and this is outdoors.

and here is the kicker... the underside is fricken red as well and i have to figure out how to remove it from all the damn ribs with out spending a huge amount to dip it.

I seriously hate spray paint, im pretty sure it was invented by the Devil.

Find a local place that does soda blasting, drop off hood, pickup a few days later, pay $30.

Its those fumes that make you see unicorns that do the work.

Slather on the paint stripper and slap a large piece of plastic over the top. Come back in an hour and pull the paint up as a sheet with the plastic or hose it off.

I have used this technique and garbage bags to peel the powdercoat off wheels.
Just slather stripper on, put in bag, wait and then spray the whole skin of powdercoat off the wheels with a hose.

30$!!! if only i had your connections Aaron

most people here wanted in excess of 150+ to do top and bottom and that is just the starting price.

and i think im going to take a break now as i just pissed myself off.... the scraper i used on the hood/scoop just dug into the plastic scoop by accident to where i can see black .... ugh i hate this.

Are you gonna give it a "pristine Paint job"??
If not, trust me..sand it down and hit it with some decent paint.

I totally stripped a hood last year and Mazda used filler in it's Manufacturing. So any imperfections will show if you strip down to bare metal and take the filler off too.
At least if you hit it..with say Black..it will look flat and not have little divets in it.

Sure you can do a section at a time.

You can also cut your little bags open and duct tape the edges together to make a bigger sheet to lay over the hood (doing first one side of the hood and then the other).

That way you can wrap the plastic over the edges when you lay it down on your lawn or whatever so the wind won't catch the edge of the plastic and send it flying.

You can get thin sheet plastic pretty cheap at a hardware store as a painter's tarp too if you have some $$ and want to save your garbage bags.

Eventually I'm going for a pearl white but the paint is bad enough that it warrants stripping completely.

It's bubbling/flaking/high spots/low spots/ spots where it's bare metal

The trick is to find a radiator repair shop that has been around for a while. Often they have a blasting room at the back which sits idle unless needed. So for a case of beer or some extra cash, they can toss the idle employee back there with a side blasting job. Just make sure they know how to do something delicate like a hood.
