Air pump

So ? I've looked around and I have been unable to find out exactly what it does.
So I ask you, what exactly does the air pump on an fc do

The air pumps puts fresh air into the exhaust so that the cat can complete the burn, removing unwanted pollutants and not clog up.

Also the air pump on NA S5 (89-91) model Rx7s actuates the 5th and 6th ports

at ~3800 RPM the air pump actuates two dashpots that open the 5th and 6th ports
