Acid Dipping
Acid Dipping
Where can I get this done and how much is it going to set me back? Pros/cons. I read somewhere once that thought it eats all thr rust away it also sorta helps the metal rust faster? is this true?
Thanks

There is a place in Brantford that does it. $2/lb. Its - THE BEST - way to strip metal, bar none. Let me find their number.....
The only problem is transportation. You take your (for example) hood up there, they dip and strip it, its beautiful, dark, bare metal. And then you toss it in the back of a pick up and drive for (in your case being from toronto) over an hour on the highway, exposing it to grime, moisture, dirt, contamination.......all long before you get it back to your place to coat it.
In case you were wondering, they don't offer coating prior to pick up. All they do is is dip it, and neutralize it.
The acid won't affect the speed at which the metal corrodes....after its neutralized that is. The only thing that affects that is contamination between being dipped, and being coated. Meaning if you mashed a sweaty palm against the middle of a part after it was dipped, then brought it home, then coated it, after some amount of time you would get rust under the paint in the shape of your palm because you contaminated that area........thats the only factor in accelerated corrosion after dipping, blasting etc. There is no adverse affect to the metal, other than when its ACTUALLY inside the tank......cmon, its freaking acid! lol

I wanted to do a shell, do they have a deal or something for that? cause wow, 2$ a lb. Does anyone know what this "acid contains of, i was reading somwhere that you can do it at home yourself, possible I can dip just parts of my shell into the acid (that require attention). Get bak to me with the number and thanks!
why do this?
I can see it of there is 20 layers of paint.
best base for new paint is good factory paint.
#1 cause of rust on almost any car is no protection (paint/sealer) between layers of
metal. what little paint is between layers will be removed in acid, speeding rusting in
the blind areas that you cant get to to re coat.
I would never dip a car unless the thickness of paint was massive and even then
i would really avoid it.
my 2 cents
matt

I knew of some ppl that Acid dipped their shells.... They have now stopped doing that. The reason being, is that, you cannot get paint in all the little gaps that exist between the layers of metal. I wouldnt do any parts that i dont have complete access to every little area. They will rust from the inside out.... Sandblasting is a good alternative.
First off - Greenwich Metal Cleaning Services - (519) 758-9897
Second - Sandblasting.....I see none of you have ever sandblasted an etire shell of a car, otherwise you would know how many hours, or sorry.....DAYS it takes to remove 80% of the sand from the car. The other 20% just doesn't go anywhere because its trapped. Now thats not really a problem, but it can be avoided by dipping.
Third - Dipping will not strech or shrink any sheetmetal. Example - you cannot blast the outside of a modern car, the metal is too thin. Perhaps husk or walnut shell blasting, but that is very expensive and hard to find skilled people to do it.
Fourth - The only problem with dipping as mentioned is that it removes everything from everywhere. Most places you would get things stripped would be able to coat the parts in another dipping tank after they were stripped. However Greenwich doesn't have this capability. If they did however, you could dip your shell, coat it, and recieve a new, e-coated shell just as it was from the factory - if not better. Of course, the cost is high also.
But seeing as this can't be done in this case, its a matter of what you're after.
And as a side note, I don't *think* (could be wrong) that Greenwich's tank is big enough for an entire shell. But call them and ask.
You'd also want to heavily research being able to bring the naked shell back to wherever you are to have it primed immediately after this if you decide to do it.

If the price is still $2/lb i definately cant afford to spend that much cash on the body of the car.
Also, does anyone know how much a decent body shop would charge for a little part of a quarter panel? nothing that big.
The shell is mazda's original paint silver and I was wondering if I myself fixed the little dings and dents around the car, would it be possible to buy the same paint and spray it on? Im not looking for a showcar. Just something that works, and is cheap.
if anyone is wondering the reason I want the rust gone is because I want to get the car ready for either T2 or T1 CASC-ON series.

Don't sandblast, use water blasting (really they're just aggressive pressure washers).
My Step dad just had his 18 Wheeler repainted after an accident (The Integra slammed into his pass side wheel at 120kph comming up the on ramp). Luckily it was due for a repaint and that's how they stripped the paint.
I think everyone wants rust gone.

Sandblasting or any kind of media blasting is a way of cleaning or abrading surfaces. It involves compressed air blowing through a nozzle which picks up fine sand from a container and mixes it into a highly abrasive stream blowing out at high velocity.
Wet sanding is a process by which very fine sand paper is used with water or other lubricants to smooth sand or polish a surface. Water is used when sanding paint because any other type of lubricant would penetrate and contaminate resulting in poor adhesion. Wet sanding is not what you need.
Surface rust can be easily taken off with an abrasive wheel on a grinder. Rusted-through panels or sections need to be cut off and replaced, there's not substitute. You don't need to have the entire car blasted or dipped just to repair certain trouble areas. Any good body shop should be able to handle this task no problem. They're set up to clean, cut repair and weld.

there is a place in brantford near HOME DEPOT (I don't remmember the name of the road) that will dip AND GALVANIZE a whole shell... now that's the best way to go I'm sure.
$2/pound sounds familiar too... a bare shell would probably cost around $1600 to do.

Galvanizing a bare shell would be amazing!! Because the reason I didn't acid dip my shell was after wards getting paint to all the unseen areas would be impossible.
if your are to acid dip then ideally it shoud be dipped in paint! Since that is a near impssible feat.... I sandblasted, cut out, and rust treated and rust on the shell.
But speaking from experience.... It is cheaper and save you millions of hours of work to just get a shell from the states. Lots of members say that there are tons of rust free rx7s just sitting in yards.
Looking back My car would already be finished if I had gone that route, with extra money in my pocket.
things to be concidered: material costs... metal, welding wire, welding gas, sand, eqiupment, welding machine, sandblast machine, grinder, grinding disc's, cut off wheels, electricity costs, countless hours, paint, sanding
Be very smart!!
The shell i have is not too bad at all, little spots that need attention, and I want to get rid of it once and for all. I dont want to sand/cut/grind it off only to see it come back later. I want to do this once and keep it that way.
