2 of 3 gens :)
Picked up this little sweet heart last week.
Had visions of building a little FB and found this gem in the paper. Picked it up for $2500CD.
The good:
1985
13B swapped (6 port)
2nd gen koyo
2nd gen oil cooler
LSD rear (not sure if its GSLSE, but its got disc brakes and leaves two black stripes )
RB intake
RB Holly 4bbl
RB header, borla pre silencer, magnaflow muffler
Sweet 14" Meshies
Decent paint
Power door locks
The bad:
Uber sloppy steering
Intermittent vibration (might be driveshaft or rear end bearings)
P/S window won't roll down, could just be the switch
Kinda smells like a barn inside
Plans are DRIVE THAT **** LIKE I STOLE IT. Does sweet burns and its very happy sliding around a parking lot
Once something happens to it, or I get the itch to wrench its *** off I'm going to throw together a 1/2 bridge engine with some ported plates I have around, and *likely* toss a TECgt ems at it and see if I can squeeze 240ish hp out of it N/A.
Also question to the FB guys, whats the deal with the targa piece????

Awesome find Joe. The Targa piece is simply trim, nothing overly special. If you don't like it there are those that would love to have it. The sloppy steering is, well, the essence of a first gen. It's just the design of the recirculating ball steering system. It's what happens when cheap and fast come together on the drawing board. Easily fixed with $1500 put towards the RE-Speed rack and pinion kit. If you don't want to spend that much you can just order new steering parts and tighten up the box. Check for water under the carpet and the notorious inner fender rust. That might be contributing to the stench.

Cool find. I see a fair number of those meshies on FB's, especially ones that are/have been tracked, I wonder if dealers might have been adding them, or if it was just a popular aftermarket piece. I think they might be an Enkei wheel you could get at Canadian Tire back in the mid-80's, when there was a lot less choice in aftermarket parts or resellers.
Targa piece = ****-poor attempt to give the RX-7 the look of the 911 Targa of the late 70's - early 80's - a 911 that was itself criticized for being heavy and awkward looking (I will say I think it's aged better - a friend has a 911 Targa, and I don't think it looks as bad now as I thought back then). But besides the problem of it being kind of awkward and really obviously tacked on, there's the fact the car is not a targa! I've always considered it an example of Mazda unfortunately breaking from their tradition of clean, functional design, and following the lead of the other Japanese manufacturer's in the 70's-80's (Nissan was especially bad), in adorning their cars with a plethora of fake grills and vents, and other cosmetic embellishments, but obviously, some people like it. Much like half vinyl roofs and faux "opera" windows on Buick Skylarks and Chevy Nova's, it's part of the style of the period.

Spend more time in the states, you'll be sorely disappointed in the human race. I think pretty much any decent family sedan can be bought looking like an old Buick. Gold emblems, chrome rocker panels, and beige vinyl on any colour car. I think they think it makes them look like money, but really, it just looks like ****. I laugh every time I see an Accord done up like that.
