Not necessary, this isn't a 69 Camaro lol

Believe me, so would I. I just happened upon this car at a point where I had alot more time than money so I went with it. The good thing about it not being 'nice' is I won't worry so much about it when thrashing it on the track which has been the problem with my last couple of cars.

Compare these with the ones at the top of the page for reference...

Left rear top...

Left rear bottom...

Right rear bottom...

Painted frame rail for motivational purposes...

Rust killer stuffs...

Sprayed the Eastwood stuff on tonight. Gotta do some seam sealing and undercoating still...

Looks better this way lol...

I didn't do the rocker seams because I'm still not happy just leaving them as is.

Bought a 8pt kit from Jegs, super cheap. But a quick look and I think I know why. Looks like the hoop might be too wide. doh.

Least it came pre-notched...

I got it mainly to use as a harness bar, probly won't use the door bars since the car won't be fast enough to require them at the strip lol.

Started fitting the hoop. It fits but is snug, which is actually a good thing.

First fitting...

Holes through the mid 'frame rail' section...

The 6x6 plates will go here once the legs are properly cut to length...

My fat finger is tight in the closest spot up top, still got a little massaging that I can do on the B pillars to make this a little tighter...

What I was talking about in my last post is how I was planning on bracing the cage at the B pillars. As you can see how this fits now I can pretty much just weld the hoop straight to the B pillars themselves without having to make a bracket to bridge the gap.

I about fell out my chair at the 69 Camaro comment! My dad and I put floor pans in our 68 Camaro drag car, after every quarter panel was replaced of course. Kick *** job so far! I do believe I'm going to have to keep up with this build!

The fit of that cage is pretty impressive given the price of Jegs kits. I've never known anyone that actually ran one.

Awesome progress so far!

A little more work done, hoping to knock the cage out by the weekend. Fully welded the rear shock towers on the inside today but forgot to take pics of that. Spot welded the undersides after though...

Somehow I managed to get the harness bar notches spot on first try. Have no idea how that happened lol...

Going to TIG as much of the cage as possible, hoping to only MIG the base plates to the body...

Mo' progress...

passenger side base plate...

angle check...

drivers side...

close enough...

I decided against running the back bars to a crossbar between the shock towers. Couldn't find a good spot to get the base plates on the frame rails so I had to make some room...

Hoop trimmed and tacked in...

Nice work. Does the rear feel less rigid without the hatch mount reinforcement?

Not at all

Built the passenger side back bar and base plate...

excuse the mess...

bar angle similarity check...

car is tilted a little in this pic to show both bars...

bar placement check...

hard to hold the phone/camera and tape measure at the same time, they're both dead on though lol...

ugly MIG'n check...

was going to TIG these but just so much easier to MIG...

Letting it cool tonight then going to cut the tack welds so I can drop it all down and finish the top. Sucks I gotta do that for only two 1/2" welds but it's the only way to do it right.

Tacks cut, baseplates out, hoop dropped into holes...

So I could weld those 1/2" beads I was talking about...

Plates back in, time to weld like hell...

B pillar welding/bracing. Front...

rear...

Strut brace start...

I might have missed it, but why did you decide against connecting the cage to the rear struts?

Riz.

It's for anything I feel like doing... drifting, drag racing, autox, HPDE's. All stuff I've done in the past and enjoy doing.

Decided I wanted to tie the frame rails into something more solid and a couple hours cutting and welding after work today resulted in this...
