MN Project 7 - A RHD lady snatcher ;)

Hello All,

My name is Nick. Many of you fellow members have purchased parts off of me, whether it be for a 2nd gen Rx-7 or 3rd gen Rx-7. A lot of people know me as "Mazda Nick" or "the guy who always parts out Rx-7s".

Well...Yet another saga begins with one of my builds. But this time...I think I may just keep it...

The story begins.

I took a five hour drive out to the eastern part of the midwest to look at another Rx-7. I passed on picking up another FD because something really draws me to the 2nd gens. That and Rx8s, but that's another story lol.

I brought the essentials with, tow straps, tow bar, drop hitch, protek r, couple qts of 20w50 Castrol gtx, radiator fluid, basic tool set, jack, money, hopes, and dreams.

Anyways, when I got to where I needed to go, I did what every rotary owner does when looking at a rotary powered vehicle and looked over the car...While test driving it, the engine pulled strong and had 100psi compression on each rotor when testing it. Did not smoke on startup either.

This was my first time driving a RHD vehicle and let me tell you, my buddy sitting in the passenger seat was freaking out lol. He would remind me that I need to get out of the center of the road lol.

But after all the basics I paid my dues and was the proud owner of a 1990 Mazda Rx-7 that was straight from Japan!

The purpose of this thread is to show people basic maintenance, driving, track days, and some basic upgrades on a RHD vehicle.

Here is what was included with the 7:
1) HKS coilovers,
2) Knightsports Fuel cut,
3) greddy boost gauge
4) coolant pressure release cap,
5) FEED front strut bar,
6) 5zigen exhaust,
7) Bridgestone 17x8.5 +30 rims
8) apparently it has a tune at 1bar, but I am not sure how this is possible on a stock turbo... (have not had enough time to verify what all else is changed or modified to this car yet though).

What needs to be fixed/maintained as of now:
1) new rear wheel bearings,
2) new clutch kit (bearing is making some noise)
3) new fluids
4) undertray
5) electrical gremlins I need to fix
6) new tires
7) fix power steering leak

Outside of that the car drove a straight 5 hours and over 300 miles without any hiccup. Averaged ~21.6 MPG on each gas stop (I added some protek r to each tank as well).

I hope you enjoy this thread. I would like to get gain knowledge while having an enjoyable build thread to communicate in routinely.

Feel free to comment, post, follow, laugh, cry, ask questions, etc.

Thanks for tuning in. Pics will be posted shortly.

Rx7 Pics

Here is shot taken from the post

As you can see, the paint code is NOT white...a possible option for me is to convert this back to its original color. Have not decided what I'd like to do yet. Does anybody know how to decode this?

The interior is pretty mint, but for some reason none of the dash lights really work and I had no power to the radio or alike.

Me in the middle of the road apparently...

I like the addition to the pedals. Does anybody know if this is a standard option in Japan?

Nice pic of the sunset while filling up.

Here is where I need some help.

When I turned on the headlights when I was in the car, the switch started to smoke. I turned it off and then removed the cluster surround. I found this:

I can picture an older Japanese guy smoking camel cigarettes ghetto rigging this for some reason (thanks Andre for the picture).

I would like a spare cluster surround if anybody has one or knows where I can get one. IF anyone can help with the parts I am going to be replacing too I am willing to buy those as well .

Thanks again for looking.

Looks like a pretty nice buy with some interesting parts. I was unaware that Bridgestone made wheels.

As far as the pedals go, they look like they are out of the infini models.

Yeah. I was unaware of the Bridgestone rims as well. I typed the numbers from the back into google and some bridgestone rims popped up. Same markings.

Either way, any suggestions on my electrical issues?

As this came straight from Japan - be sure to hit up a dyno ASAP to get the tune dialed in for USA gasoline - way to many examples of fresh JDM turbo cars exploding under boost shortly after arriving here due to much lower octane in North America

Great suggestion. It is now winter here so I will not be driving it anytime soon. My buddy from Turblown is trying to get me to purchase another Adaptronic for this.

I will need to check the ecu out when I am doing the electrical this winter. Someone thought it may be tuned on a knightsports ecu. However, that is all speculation. Will need to really look at what this all has.

Happy New Year!

So I have done a little bit to the 7 since a few weeks ago. Between work and preparing for the baby still it has left me with minimal time to get stuff done to it.

Started with fixing the electrical wiring issue:

To the left a US version signal switch harness and the right is the JDM one.

To remove the pins I used a nice small pick I got from harbor freight...

More updates here shortly...

After taking some time to remove all of the wires in the US plug I arrived with this:

Burnt JDM vs. Good US version.

After several hours of removing pins and then making sure the wires were all good I came to the decision to use the wires from the US version and just make sure the pins were in the same layout as the RHD JDM harness.

Some may know that most of the wires are in different locations in the US version harness than the JDM version. The wires are the identical colors, but just in different locations. I had extra DR-25 laying around from when Shawn at Turblown and I wired up my old S5 T2 M1200 earlier this year to give it a more cleaner look afterwords.

And then I had power again

To Be continued very shortly LOL

After looking at both of my switches on the RHD cluster surround I came to the conclusion I probably would be better off finding a replacement signal and light switch to be safe. I noticed that when I put the headlight switch in I will not have any shorting out of the dash or tail lights. However, when I put the signal switch in (or connect it) and then go to push the cluster tight against the dash to secure it I get a short. It only happens when I try to push it close to the dash with the signal switch installed.

Any ideas?

Burned area on headlight switch (does not seem to be affecting the switches power).

The switch I really need to find a replacement for

If anyone can lead me in the direction for both new or good condition used JDM RHD switches that would be awesome!

I would also like to buy a nicer cluster surround. The US version IS different than the RHD one :p. I have plenty of the LHD versions laying around so I have tried just in case lol.

After doing all of that harness rewiring I am left with these wires I do not have the slightest idea of what purpose they serve. I presume that some go to the turbo timer that is installed (which does not work), but one goes to the fog light switch. Not sure what would be there?

I always love finding money while cleaning :p
