My FC3S journey, from stock to 20b widebody racecar!!! (picture heavy)

Hello everyone, its time for me to make a thread about my 1988 Rx7-TII that i have owned for 4 years now, bought it as a fairly stock FC with a BOMEX bodykit and a fresh rebuild, it also had a full set of polyurethane bushings and 18" rims with 235's. It also had a fresh paintjob but the prep work was crap :-/.

CHAPTER 1:
(edit: Cant get pictures to show, but if you right click on the links and open in a new tab it works strangely enough...)

Pictures from the sellers garage, just before i bought it

I got it home and immediatly pulled the manifold, did a total emissions removal and removed omp and also replaced teh steering rack with a manual one

Replaced all rubber hoses with hi-temp silicone ones and zip-tied them, changed oil, sparkplugs, installed an rtek 1.7 along with a walbro 255lph and 720cc secondaries and a FMIC.

Ofcourse that made it run fairly hot with the stock cooler and no ducting.....that resulted in a Koyo N-flow all aluminum cooler, the kink on the coolant hose was fixxed if you have to know ;-)

Drove it like that at about 13psi for a summer, enjoyed it like hell but wanted more power, handling and a LSD.....
End of chapter one, to be continued :-)

Chapter ii

Summer past and the winter came....and so did a few goodies in the mail.

Pulled the rear suspension and installed urethane diff and subframe mounts and a Re amemiya LSD, the polyurethane bushings the PO mounted seemed fine at the time.

Re amemiya to the right and stock to the left

Bought some parts from a forum member, haltech PS1000 with FFE trigger and a twin scroll dual wastgate manifold

Some new transmission bushings made of polyurethane, and i also repainted the transmission crossmember

Bought a new T04S 60-1 BB P-trim AR 1.0

Made a new fuel system with intank Bosch 044 in a modified hanger with AN8 feed/AN6 return in Stainless braided PTFE hoses with pressfitted AN connections. Paired with a ID1000/1300 combo of injectors and the FFE injector diffusor delete "cups"
Spark is given by smartcoils/MSD wires @4ms dwell

Made a bracket for the haltech TPS, installed a haltech AIT and CTS

Put everything together, along with some radiator ducting and a HKS SSQV3 BoV

Fired it up on 1st try and checked for leaks and so on, find none but didnt like the way the engine looked and i wanted better response from the poor stock port s4 keg with all mazda internals so i began a s5 lower/s6 upper intake conversion along with s6 TB and greddy elbow. Didnt like the looks of the adapters avalible and i didnt want to elevate my UIM anymore so i welded up and port-matched the intakes instead. I also totally shaved the LIM and welded all the vacuum ports

The LIM was portmatched aswell but got no pics of it :-/

Looking alot better

After Conversion

Took it to the dyno and got 383hp@15psi, had a 407@17 but backed off due to my weak s4 stockblock

Ran a 13.0@110mph with 16" very old very dry very cheap street tires...spun thru 1st 2nd and 3rd

Installed some LEDs to light up the licenseplate and position lights, gave it a polish and drove it the entire summer without any troubles at all, also had a used set of tein type HA installed...they worked but they weren't pretty

The car passed smog without all emissions and without catalytic converter.....good tuner and some e85/gasoline mixture

winter came again and i wanted more of everything....called my enginebuilder and talked about building a roadracing longlasting 550rwhp 13b and came the conclusion that it wont happen....not since i want to be able to smog the car and use it on the streets aswell and not being forced to rebuild to often.
Thats when this happend:

C240 and in great shape, low miles and looking fking awesome

End of chapter II.....chapter 3 is incoming!!

Chapter 3:
Pulled the 13b and sold it

And this mess of an engine bay annoyed the **** out of me

Pulled everything, tackwelded the enginebay, simplified all the electrical harnesses of the car and rerouted the front harness under the fender. Then painted the enginebay with 3 layers of epoxi then 3 layers of black (the kind of color that contains of both base and hardener)

Proceeded with the inside of the car....thank god for dry ice

This is where i am now:
-Dropped subframe and send the entire front suspension on powdercoating after i mediablasted it, meanwhile i grinded the wheelwells totally clean of paint and tar and i will start painting them up asap

Ordered and installed Supernow Pillowball bushings in my freshly coated yellow control arms

Prepaired the 20b for dropping it of to my builder....its under the knife as we speak

Threw the HVAC and heater out the window and got this instead.....more effective, super small and lightweight

Going with FFE trigger for the 20b aswell

Stay tuned for modified dash, more pillowballs, Widebody fenders, new front bumper and hood and lots of 20b parts/pics

That little heater core is made for rally and racing, cost 200usd and weigh 2.2lbs . Its 10" x8"x4" and has four 2" hose outlets, the water connections are 1/2", draws 2amps i belive and it moves ALOT of air!

Changed my mind AGAIN with ECU, my tuner preferes haltech and i was super happy with my PS1000 on my 13b so a PS2000 with racepac will have to do on the 20b, wanted a elite 2500 but i got this PS2000 used, super cheap and racepac included........guy was sponsored anyway and it used to controll a 900awhp skyline :-)

Also ordered a short Excessive LIM and 6x AEM smartcoils, only thing i need now is a clutch and to shorten the driveshaft and figure out how to make the engine/gearbox and rear differential to align so i can build the engine and gearbox mounts.....any ideas how to measure this? how precis do i have to be?

Save yourself some time and money on the driveshaft shortening.

13B-RE & 20B Engine Brackets

They have the brackets to line it all up perfectly

Yes they do but the engine position is **** (for a racecar), to high and to far forward, and i need to lower my engine 1 inch anyway to fit me bmw 1000nm capable gearbox (bigg *** thing) and to do that it needs to come back 5.5iches first to clear the steering rack and swaybar :-)
I also need to shorten and modify the driveshaft anyway to fit the bmw gearbox. The only real problem is mounting the engine/gearbox in the right angle and centered to the rear diff

Good to know. I honestly didn't know which box you were going to use. I am excited to see how it ends up.

It is a bmw gearbox, 6-speed ZF called GS6-53DZ, its rated to 530nm from factory but there is alot of heavy *** bmw 5-series doing low 9sec passes in 1/4 mile with this gearbox year after year....they do whine alittle (beefy internals and its made for a double mass flywheel) and they prefer sub 9k rpm shifting but that is no problem since ill have a 20b

finished the supernow control arm kit today, was super happy with the result. This kit seems like super quality and there will be no binding here. I hate the fact that they are purple thou as they are silver on thier homepage :-/

Had a lovely day in the garage, started the day with grinding the wheelwells (correct word for it?) and painted them with 2 layers of Temadur20 then glued the seams and finished of with another 2 rounds of Temadur 20, cant really decide if i should use something to top if of....this paint is very hard and very anti-corrosive.

Then i made a mockup of the front suspention as i got the final parts from the powdercoater, now i need to find some decent balljoints.......

Also started to mount my newly flocked dash and building a electrical circuit that is Time-attack legal

Then santa did a comeback and left me a Xcessive 20b LIM(short version) and matching fuel rail.

basicly all i need now is my engine, 2 oil coolers and to finish mounting the front end including fabing a v-mount.
