Well I've had the 79 steering wheels on two RX-7s and even a Miata. No problems at all. I just bolted it straight on. Maybe your wheel came from a car with the rare power steering option and it's different? The wheels looked similar up until maybe 83. Does you FC have ABS?

Huh?
I'm sure the FB wheel fits fine, my earlier comment was directed at your statement about the wheel "seating" on the plastic collar and the collar being necessary for the wheel to bolt on straight.
The wheel is indexed by the splines on the steering shaft and seats on the taper directly behind them- the plastic TS collar does nothing in this regard, indeed is not strong enough to do so.
Remove the collar altogether and the wheel will still be fine, just the signals will not cancel.

With the wheel fully tightened down there should be freeplay (endfloat?) between the collar and the wheel hub.

When I put the 85 wheel on the back of the hub presses up against the column cover of the S5 column and if I leave it lose enough to not crus the collar it moves front and back like a wobble

Updates!!!!!!!!!

Just a little update, Suspension is in. Height is just about dialed in completely. Little things to do before it goes on the road. But here are the wheels painted and ready to go along with some other stuff like the Tii hood addition as well as the fogs finally wired up properly.

Did the RX-8 wheels require spacers? I am about to swap my MX-5 wheels, MX-5 wheels and RX-8 wheels are the same fitment, onto my FC for a while till it gets new tires, and I wanted to make sure it would fit.

Sorry to get a little off topic, but this is a very nice build.

Thank you for the compliment

Yes they needed 20mm spacers with extended lugs. I went with eBay spacers hub-centric. Haven't had any issues and they've seen a few burnouts, a lotta sharp cornering, and a decent amount of highway speeding 100+.

Couple of new additions again.

HKS intake (still have to secure the mount if anyone has any ideas) and Goose Island shifter (Just for shows, best birthday gift ever!) will be getting a Jack Daniels shifter this up coming week for daily driving!

comments?

New Stuffs

Thanks man I sold the wheels though. Made barely any profit, but it was worth getting my money back. Without a body kit or coilovers, 18s are too big.

But I am working on fitting a new set up as we speak (16x8 +16) I did put up a Borla catback as well as picked up a Racing Beat downpipe and am currently working on a 2.5" stainless cat delete. So far the car is running incredibly smooth. Took care of a few minor things like a new master and slave cylinder. Also bolted up an HKS intake.... yes I know it is for looks however my car does run a bit smoother. Either way I am happy. Now working on the power steering pump and doing a Ford Taurus alternator swap.

For next year, I am looking to build a fully functional cold air box for the HKS to sit in and collect cold air

Also hoping to picking up a Yellow top Optima battery and Monster Cable 3 Terminal battery extension to clean up that corner of the bay next year.

Okie dokes so purchased a Racing Beat down pipe and bought some 2.5" stainless and created my own exhaust section. I installed them today and ohhhhh boy what a difference. Sounds incredible and has quite a bit more pop. Here's some photos. Also, it shoots flames with ease now

So I finally got around to running the new fog light power wires through the firewall. The result needed me to relocate my power mirror switch and make a spot for the fog light switch. After a couple of months of debating on positions I found a spot which suits me well and is out of the way and sight. (If you haven't seen the whole thread I made my own cup holder in the position these switches normally lay) the photos speak for themselves. Here's what I've been up to:

1/08/14
- pulled passenger seat
- began pulling HIDs
- Fixed passenger side speaker panel
- Took apart (luckily got back together) fog switch.
- drilled a hole in the firewall
- ran wire for fog lamp switch
- removed center console

1/09/12
- removed drivers seat
- removed speaker cover
- removed steering wheel
- removed turn cancel
- removed door sills/kick panels
- tidied up wires under dash
- fixed tilt steering
- flipped shift light (check to see if functional)
- ran wire from fuse box for fog switch
- completed removing all HID wiring

1/10/14
- test fit wrx seats

1/12/14
- cut holes for power mirror and fog switches

1/13/14
- epoxy switches in place

They honestly looked like they were going to sit in great. They weren't as wide as I thought! They are super comfy but the kid selling them didn't tell me they were almost busting at the seems and had a couple of holes. So I test fit my buddies for future reference. I didn't take his wrx rails off u just sat them on the floor but they still sat in place without touching the ceiling. Custom brackets wouldn't be hard to make for the drivers seat but adapting the angle on the passenger rail (the rx7 rail) would be a little tricky
