JDM 91 T2 Build

hey everyone, im gonna go ahead and start a build thread. since im pretty new hopefully
some of yall vets can tell me why my ideas are terrible, or what would be a
better route or problems yall have run into when trying something im trying. im
on a boat until dec. so i wont be installing any of my upgrades within the next
couple weeks but so far, ths is what i got :
Goal: 300ish HP, still passing emissions

already have: walboro fuel pump, stance coilovers
have, but not installed: Ap engineering power fc , ID1000 injectors, silicon vacuum hose kit, bonez 2.75in dp and hi flo cat.
wanna run about 10 psi boost.

any advice or tips on this build and estimates of hp would be greatly appreciated. ill post progress when i fnally get started next month!

can someone school me a lil bit on turbos? after a little research, ive come to realize that i probably wont be making the numbers i want with the stock turbo. ive seen that most people go w/ the bnr hybrid or gt35r. but when making my own decision for turbo choice, what kind of things would i have to consider? what are some turbo basics, recommendations, and limitations w/ my setup? thanks in advance,

just an update,
finally made it back on land. havent gotten around to doin anything crazy. removed and cleaned all the corrosion off the ic. lookes way better than before. plan on trying to do the vacuum hose swap in the next couple days if i have the time.

a couple more things i have installed, but forgt to mention: knightsports catback, koyo radiator, and mazdaspeed front strut bar.

Just to address your 300hp goal, I'm too lazy to type it out and I want to give credit where its due.

Check out this thread. j9fd3s has a run down on the easy way to go. Post #6 In the next serval posts, more members also chime in.

finally got the uim and throttle body pulled. gonna clean them up a lil bit and probably repaint them, and hopefully ill get a little better response on the throttle. mainly though, i pulled these out to start changing out the vacuum hoses underneath. but after removing these parts, i didnt really see too many accessible vacuum lines from here.. also, does that thermowax look normal to you guys? is that the position it should be in when cold?

Your fuel pulsation dampener on the primary rail looks like it is seeping. Replace your primary rail ASAP if that's the case. You will experience what we call in the industry a "thermal event".

Find a S4 primary rail that is aluminum and install it without the dampener.

atsugiT2 12-13-15 10:38 PM

that may have actually been from me sprayin a bunch of things w/ wd40 to break em loose. good eye tho. if you turn out to be right, ill definitely look into that. thanks!
you see anything else that needs addressing? what else do i need to remove yo access the rats nest?

atsugiT2 12-13-15 10:51 PM

does this dashpot look like its adjusted correctly? it seems like it should be depressed normally, given the direction that the tab it sits against moves when you push the throttle(away). theres almost no pressure against it as it is, so that means it would never serve a purpose, right?
maybe my idle adjust screw(also in pic) has been adjusted so much over the years, that its too far away from the dashpot now. any advice?

so... just started on the vacuum lines today and they are hard as tits.. this is gonna be a long day...

atsugiT2 12-15-15 01:42 AM

welp, its all done guys! i didt actually change all the vacuum lines, but i changed all the ines i could reach. when i first turned it on, it died at cold start like usual. but then i realized i didnt comnect my boost gauge vacuum line. after i did, i tried starting up again and the idle went to a steady 1500! after a while of idling like that, it began idling for 5 secs and then dropping over and over. after i turned down the idle to an appropriate level, it idles very solid. throttle response is about the same, but it wasnt bad to begin with. a success overall.

my next move will probably be next week. ill be adding my bones turboflo(v2) dp and hiflow cat.
after that ill be scheduling an appointment w/ scoot.
their shop was pretty legit btw. they had a 1000 hp rx8, and i saw their 4 rotor datsun and the fd 4 rotor w/ the mercedes-looking rear bumper/diffuser. ill take a few pics next time im there.

MaczPayne 12-18-15 12:27 AM

Hey, do you live in Atsugi?

I was there on business back in July. It's a nice town!

300HP should be attainable with a BNR2 or equivalent hybrid.

If you're the handy type, you can even build your own hybrid! Check the thread below.
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...hybrid-959045/

atsugiT2 12-18-15 06:54 AM

yeah, i do. i agree, its pretty nice. also close to everything.

i talked to scoot and they told me they wanna just throw on an intercooler and bore out the stock turbo. ill probably go that route this time.
if i every get access to my own space though, id be down to try building my own fersure! appreciate it!

the internet has forgotten it, but Scoots demo car from 1999, was a red FD with a T51 kit making 710ps@22psi. they did some top speed type runs with it, and it does 327kph on public roads, not as fast as mercedes (~390kph in 1937), but its still impressive.

ie they know what they are doing with a rotary

atsugiT2 12-19-15 03:09 AM

yeah, ive heard nothing but good about them. im excited to see what they can do w/ mine over the next couple months!

atsugiT2 12-24-15 02:20 AM

so i tried removing my old downpipe and cat to install my bonez system. the 2 upper bolts for the turbo to downpipe are just way too tight and fragile. im gonna strip em to death if i dont figure out a way to break em loose. any ideas? and if i do strip em, how hard would it be to remove the whole turbo to break that part loose?
also, one of the nuts seems like some piece of metal like melted onto it and is causing it to be a larger size on the top than the rest of the nut.. thanks in advance
carrington

atsugiT2 12-28-15 04:50 AM

good new, gave that dp + cat swap another try today and was finally able to break those nuts loose. i ended up banging the smallest size i could on the nut w/ the melted stuff on top. and used like half a can of liquid wrench and about 5 hrs of struggling. after install notes: theres a temp probe that goes into the cat and my new cat doesnt have a hole for that, so now i have an exhaust temp warning light on. my exhaust sound got slightly louder and more crisp. also, it feels more responsive now. however, im also scared to redline it now. cause under WOT, my boost shoots straight to like 11-12. idk how accurate the guage is, but before i was boosting to about 9-10 and i idle at about 18-20 vac..

after i get my car tuned i should be able to guage its performance a lil better. sorry i didnt take pics of the job. i was just ready to see the after effects. wasnt even thinking about pics..

MaczPayne 12-28-15 03:01 PM

Seems like the less restrictive exhaust is causing boost creep. Is the wastegate ported?

atsugiT2 12-28-15 08:39 PM

yeah, honestly i expected it to happen. i was just hoping it wouldnt. but nahh, as far as i know, the wastegate hasnt been ported.

im installing the power fc and having scoot throw a map on there, so ill just have them map for up to like 20psi that way i know im not running lean even if im creeping. is that an ok fix for this situation? i know ideally, its better to port the wastegate to prevent creep, but is there a downside to just allowing boost to creep a few psi if youre mapped for it?

MaczPayne 12-28-15 10:21 PM

The problem with the stock turbo creeping past 11psi is excessive heating of the intake charge. The factory intercooler does a good job at stock boost pressures, but struggles to reject the excess heat at >10-11 psi. Your biggest danger at this point is combustion chamber temperatures and possibly knock. In addition, the turbocharger will likely fail prematurely as the unit is not designed for such operating conditions.

I cannot say with certainty that your fix is okay because I don't know how you intend to drive your car. If it's any sort of hard driving where you're hard on the throttle through the gears, I would stomach the task and do the porting. I believe you have the skills and aptitude to perform this task and we're all more than willing to help your through it. You've got the S5 so your turbine housing is the best candidate for porting.

atsugiT2 01-04-16 06:16 AM

yeah, a front mounts on my to do list definitely. ill probably run w/ the stock turbo for now though. scoot is even talking about just porting it out to put me at 300 hp while still keepin it kinda stock looking.

atsugiT2 01-04-16 06:21 AM

ive been tryin to pick up a rear strut bar, but after some studying i think my money would be better spent on a bushing kit. so i ended up buying the prothane kit from banzai. im pretty cheap so im gonna try the bolt and socket method and probably hate myself for it the whole time..

suspension is pretty foreign to me, so this'll be a learning experience im sure.

atsugiT2 01-15-16 07:28 AM

just an update, i recieved my bushings. just waiting on some freetime. i bought a rear strut bar as well, only because it was like 25 dollars. its like a knockoff cusco
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...4562f2d24a.jpg
type bar. but function over form when its in the trunk anyway..
i also picked up an apexi intake. i combined a power intake filter with a super intake(older model apexi) coupling. i have no idea how im gonna attach it though.. maybe some intercooler piping forced in there and siliconed. less bummy ideas welcome..
i also made a spot for my 2 gauges( boost and af). it turned out pretty good, havent installed it yet though. its gonna go where the radio is right now.

well i got that wideband installed and i found that i idle very rich, to the point that the gauge goes from 14.7ish to about 18 and then i just grt dashes instead of numbers cause it doesnt read that rich. also, under boost im at 10.1-10.7ish. but the gauge works, so thats a plus i guess.
