Yea that's why I going to keep boost around the 15 mark or lil lower . The s5 na iron I believe is thicker in that area possibly so maybe a upgrade for rebuild down the road . . And the
Warp thing did come to mind . Guess you would just have to heat the iron a little bit and weld fast in short burst .

Keep the pics come op . To bad you couldn't keep the snorkel for the intake cause of the fmic . It was a nice piece

atsugiT2 04-13-16 08:01 AM

mann, i wish i was putting in 15psi. im set at 10ish right now(peaking at 4k and down to 5 by 7k if anyone was wondering). only putting 220 to the wheels. good enough til i get a new snail i guess.

regarding the airfilter cone, ive seen it on rhdjapan, im pretty sure its made by autoexe, or i may be able to let mine go if scoot didnt junk it. it was nice though. havent had any temp problems so far. we'll see how true that stays w/ the fmic blocking the rad and the intake pulling in hotter air now.

he pointed out that red area specifically. idk if that means the whole circumference of that oil passage or what. and idk about the warping thing, or welding in general..lol

atsugiT2 04-13-16 08:11 AM

also, im running an ogura light clutch and flywheel now. they said my clutch was slipping after like 5psi(which sounded about right, id been noticing my clutch was pretty much done). so i had em swap it out. he said there was an oil leak in my rear housing so he changed the oil seal and o ring while he was back there.

unek87 04-13-16 12:05 PM

Believe me when I say this big ass holset hx-52 turbo is spooling at 5 psi by 4200rpm and starts to pull and keep pulling . I gotta get a bigger wastegate now I think cause 15 is still to low for it lol . Sometimes I wish I would of stayed stock or hybrid stock if I would have known what I know now . But Nothing like a bsp 6port turbo spool 😈

atsugiT2 08-04-16 04:05 AM

back from the dead. picked up a new turbo the other day on a hunch(s.o. to streetport 7) anyway, they had it listed as a stock ht18 but it looked like a hybrid. so i picked it up. i took off the compressor cover and measured the wheel. it seems like a v trim t04b. 70/55mm approx(courtesy or those pieces of paper i made to measure with cause i dont have the tool..lol
theres no chips or shaft play or anything; however, as you'll see in the pics theres a lil bit of oil in it. is this an ok amount, or does it call for a rebuild?
thanks in advance,
carrington

anyone?

MaczPayne 08-05-16 12:23 AM

I'd have it rebuilt regardless; you can even do this yourself if you're handy (there are a few write-ups here for that).

The biggest pain is spending all that time installing the turbo just to find out it's leaking oil on the first drive, then doing the work all over again.

atsugiT2 08-05-16 03:21 AM

truee.. the kits only like $60 on gpopshop so better safe than sorry huh? any guess on how much ill be putting down with this? im hopin for like 280-300

MaczPayne 08-05-16 02:45 PM

Yeah, I'd say those are numbers you'd expect.

If you want the best boost response and less pressure drop at high revs, swap in a dual port wastegate actuator with a 12lb spring and control it with an electronic boost controller. When tuned right, you'll have one hell of a fun car.

atsugiT2 09-30-16 09:26 AM

I bought a twin port universal actuator im gonna swap in and the rebuild kit from gpop shop. you don't think ill be able to control it with the pfc? as opposed to buying an electronic boost controller. I kinda like the simplicity of the pfc boost control. less that can go wrong at least.

atsugiT2 10-03-16 08:28 AM

got a lot of changes I have planned for this winter: firstly I plan to rebuild and install that turbo I have up there. mess around with the turbo control system( the wastegate actuator and get some practice messing with it in the PFC), trying to generally optimize my maps for the winter and hopefully get better performance and reliability out of it along with making the necessary adjustments to run the extra boost.
ive actually been doing a lot of studying about using the power fc. the yahoo group has a lot of useful information and tools on there and after reading and rereading it, its really starting to come together as a system. timing still makes me a little nervous. but to anybody wondering, the buy-in for the group is definitely worth it for anyone trying to get more hands on with PFC, or tuning theory in general.

also looking to upgrade hoods to vent some of that hot air out of the bay. maybe a foresight or dmax hood im thinking. don't really wanna do any body work right now, but its necessary. my intake temps aren't terrible, but I think water temp could stand to be lower. when its very hot and im running my car hard it'll sometimes start coming out of the overflow on the reservoir after shut off. im not sure its blown seals though, its not an all the time thing..

also, seeing as I plan on doing some changes to my maps as an amateur, I plan on also running that AEM water injection kit. more as a safety net and carbon buildup eliminator.

since that hybrid is out of the car still and easily accessible, im also gonna probably port the wg just so I don't have to later.

gonna be a busy winter, hope I don't blow my motor.. haha

atsugiT2 11-24-16 07:25 PM

started rebuilding the turbo yesterday. everything looks good aside from some orange powder that seemed to be blocking theoil passage to the thrust bearing. no idea what it is. doesnt really look like corrosion related powder, but it could be i guess?
anyways, i have the CHRA soaking in purple power and then im gonna clean up the outside and throw it back together. gonna use STP Oil Treatment as a lubricant, i think its supposed to be a decent alternative to engine rebuilding lubricant?
also thinking about doing a cat delete today.

be methodical. it helps to keep a notebook, and then make 1 change at a time. tuning tip 1, all of the good tuners i know, start at as low a boost setting as possible, tune it, and then raise the boost a little and check it again, and so on. in other words they don't just start tuning at 20psi, they work their way up.

tuning tip 2, on the JDM dyno sheets i've seen the AFR's are a LOT more consistent than the average one i see here. one of my Rx7 magazines has a tuning article, and they tune an FD from .6 kg/mm to over 1.0 kg/mm, and for each run the AFR only varies by +/- .2 AFR in total. in an engine that is a little picky about fuel, it probably helps to be really consistent. they also were not that rich, 11.2 AFR.

tip 3 the average JDM tuner runs colder spark plugs. they also take care to make sure the plug wires are insulated or away from each other, cross firing is possible, and it is very very bad.

tip 4, ask. scoot is an internationally known tuning shop.

atsugiT2 12-07-16 11:09 PM

thanks boss. yeah, the tune he did for mine though i found to be kinda rich in boost, like 10s. but he may have tuned it in consideration of the coming winter. now that its getting colder and i removed the cat and turned up my boost duty a little bit, its in the 11s.

and yeah, i agree. scoots got me running like 11s for spark plugs. the greddy racing plugs.

my plan was to try to adjust the tune myself after i install this turbo and then take it back to scoot for him to look it over and tell me what he thinks and do it a lil more precisely on the dyno if necessary.

atsugiT2 12-07-16 11:17 PM

finished the rebuild and port of the turbo also. went fairly smooth. ended up using the old 360 degree thrust bearing because the one my kit came with was only a 270.

probably doesnt look like i ported much from the wastegate, but it was a lot of material i removed. used a dremel and a die grinder with carbide burrs.

finally installed that hybrid. was probably the most difficult job ive done on this car so far. just cause i had to remove and reinstall that thing like 5 times.

unfortunately, im overboosting like a mf. like 15-20psi at the lowest duty setting on the pfc. i talked to scoot and he said im not gonna be able to effectively control boost on this turbo with the power fc alone and that i should get an actual boost controller and then try. or that my actuator arm could be too short..for some reason he specifically said NOT Greddy for the boost controller, even though that seems to be the most popular. so ill probably go with the hks evc-s.

also fried my afr gauge cause the wires got too close to the exhaust and burned thru, so i cant really do any logging and tuning right now.

the turbo feels great though. will post pics later.

been working on street tuning lately. its looking like full, steady 16ish psi by about 3500. ive been messing with fuel and have been able to get it to about 11.2-11.7 in boost. a little too lean for my tastes, but im not done yet. i was having some trouble managing boost with just the power fc and thought maybe it had somethin to do with me running a dual port wg actuator, but after putting my sequential settings as recommended by (i think) arxgh ive been able to keep it ok.

MaczPayne 03-29-17 12:53 AM

Looks like you've made some good progress. Way to get in there and work with your hands!

Just a note on boost control - if you're having issues controlling boost creep without a boost controller, the problem cannot be fixed with a boost controller alone.

Are ya using a Datalogit during tuning? It would be interesting to see what the boost curve is like on that turbo.

atsugiT2 03-29-17 02:22 AM

yeah, but i think it may be soley a boost control method thing. because just over the past couple days my boost has gone down to a solid .8 max. which is also my actuator spring pressure (i ended up doing the whole dual port actuator with a 12lb spring thing you recommended.. lol) so i dont think its a wastegate/exhaust issue causing creep and spikes.

on the boost having dropped thing, im expecting my solenoid may have died. ill have to make some logs and see what the wg% looks like. the only other thing it could be is timing. i did a little smoothing of my maps, but i dont think that would limit boost in that manner.

but yeah, i use datalogit. ill post a picture from a 3rd gear, 15ish psi pull when i get home.

im not sure what i messed up.. i posted the log of me a few days ago, and i posted the one of me today. looking at wg percent, it seems like the solenoid is trying to make boost go up, but its not happening which makes me think its something physical, like a popped off hose after the solenoid, but everything looked good to me.. i even tried switching back to my old map and its still the same.

atsugiT2 04-02-17 06:42 AM

i tried everything- rewiring the solenoid, blocking off the bov cause i thought it was leaking in boost, checking the compressor wheel for damage. turns out it was just a loose intercooler coupling.. easy fix. and surprisingly accurate boost control with pfc now, in second gear at least. .94 when set at .95 and 42% duty cycle. didnt have space to push it today.
