Fuhnortoner's 88 FC "Quest for 400 Horsepower!"
About a week ago I picked up a 88 FC. The car, from what I can tell, started out as a 88 SE. I bought the car from the PO as a roller.
Some of the upgrades PO did are 5 lug swap with bbs vert wheels and LSD, and a full body kit painted jet fighter gray (makes up names for colors). The car also came with 4 piston calipers for the front, and no rotors or pads, and the calipers were not attached to the car. The engine; supposedly had good compression. The PO bought the engine with a disassembled water pump area. The PPO somehow managed to break the water pump bracket on the front plate. PO had it welded, And never reassembled. Don't kno if I trust it, don't care. I'm planning to swap with a tii engine. Pics coming soon, iPhone won't let me upload for some reason. Last Monday I stripped all the bullshit off the top of the engine to get it ready for pulling. Plenums, exhaust, rats nest, everything. Saturday I bought all new brake rotors and pads. Also bought new pin kits for the pads since the PO had lost everything for the calipers. Also had to buy new 12mm bolts for the calipers. Bled brakes and everything worked properly from what I can tell. I was using a boat anchor and a piece of a bed frame to chock the tires, so being able to use the e brake was a big plus. So yesterday I pulled the motor. Came out super easy. Love the engine room in these cars. I will probably be parting all the n/a stuff to fund my tii swap, but that's for another thread. |

One of things I plan on doing are TII engine swap from a s5. After that will be a bigger turbo, fuel control, timing, and bigger injectors. Looking for around the 300-350 hp range.
8lb flywheel and clutch kit would be in the list of things to do next. Also thinking about torsen diff or rebuilding the clutch type on the one I have. Still researching this. As for suspension, I wanna go with adjustables, like tokiko blues. I used to have tien s type springs. Thinking about goin with them again. Here's the POs pic of the car. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...28123c2eec.jpg Here's some of my pics. On my way home. Hour drive to pick up this beast. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7fa2c68cd4.jpg Engine stripped https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ba8a77ca48.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f2c3f6aac6.jpg Car info https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...6fee5d262e.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d363f42f55.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e2ac9c7366.jpg |

Been neglecting my build thread so heres an update.
Engine installed and wired with haltech e6x. Base map loaded. Car starts and idles perfectly. Fmic installed Intercooler piping installed Efan and shroud installed but not wired Bought 2 front seats and installed since the car had no seats. Bought tii to n/a dshaft, not installed yet. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...3d9c990fe3.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...a67688d68d.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8e1c367865.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...a2ecccb12b.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...3fd126fc53.jpg |
Update:
dshaft installed. Tii throttle cable installed. New clutch slave master flex hose. So I was like, yay, today I get to drive my car. All excited and shit. Flex hose was the last thing to go on. This was my first time removing the slave from this engine. Pulled it off, and WATER come pouring outta the mother effer. Completely seized and rusted out. If it's not one thing it's another. Just ordered one, should be here in a couple hours. |
Got my shit. Waiting for my buddy to come over to help me bleed it out. Then I'm gonna take her around the block.
|
Drove car. Ran like shit under a load.
|
Mushroom air filter on it's way as well as my new lc1 innovate wideband kit.
After that I'm gonna start the tuning process. |
Sweet!

Got my wb. The sent me a lc2 kit and I was expecting a lc1. I know that the lc2 replaces the lc1, but the description said lc1 so I figured It was just old stock.

Update.
Fixed the timing issue. I had originally used a haltech base map from the haltech section. The ignition settings were 65 on the trigger angle, and an 11 tooth offset. Turns out my setup called for a 5 tooth offset, rather than 11. timing is now dialed in perfectly. Idle is super smooth. Fires right up cold or hot. I also added a zero throttle map. Seems like a slight load on the engine calls for a completely different fuel setting than when it's idling. Still have a little herky jerk when driving. From what I read on my wideband, it's because it's running lean. I can't get the afr to richen up past 16 when driving. After talking with some buddies and a couple drinks, someone mentioned fuel pump. Bam it hit me. I'm still running n/a fuel pump like a dummy. So next step is fuel pump. I was thinking of going with a walboro 255, but somebody told me I have to get a different pressure regulator to run it. So I Did some research, and now in leaning towards an FD fuel pump. So, fuel pump, fuel tune, and cleaning up the engine bay, and that should be it for the engine side of things. |

How tough was it to change the wheel bearings? And where did you get them from? Expensive job?
|
Funny you should ask.
Taking the hub off was simple. The bearing needs to be pressed out. I don't have a press. Today I'm going to oreilly to see if I can get their bearing removal tool to work. If not Im off to my local machine shop where they said they would charge me 40 bucks to press out the old one and press in the new one. The bearing was a master pro. 35 Bucks |
Thanks for the info lol. Cause I went in to get an alignment and just out of curiosity I tried shaking the wheels and a few of them have some play. I get really bad high speed shaking so all I could do was get a balance. But alright thanks. Gives me a better idea of how much I'll spend.
|
Yeah thankfully only one of mine was bad, so bad I couldn't go faster than 20mph.
The front bearing race came off with the spindle. |
Ouch! And for your fuel upgrades, I'm running the aeromotive FPR. Seems to be doing the job well in case you're a bit hesitant as to what to get.

Update.
Ditched the E6X and went with a Sprint RE. Injectors cleaned and flow tested. Walbro 255 installed. AEM Boost Controller. E-Fan. LC2 WB. Glowshift FPG. New TPS. TII Complete drive train installed. Drove her around the block a couple times. Seems fairly stable. Having it tuned soon. Will update with photos and dyno results. |
3" straight pipe was too much for my taste. Went with RB Universal Presilencer and Muffler. Very satisfied with the noise reduction. I believe its quieter than my old dual midas mufflers on my NA.
Exhaust done both times by Dom at 209 Muffler in Stockton. Those guys are awesome. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...90c78fbec3.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5ced55879c.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...49aa8fc155.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d52cdeb7cf.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2f62d68e99.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d1338e30e9.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ccddcfe359.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1640969260.jpg |

Nice build! Just 1 advice regarding the injector resistors.....they can be prone to overheating or getting to warm and thereby changing the characteristics of your injectors. It is probably better to mount them right next to the ecu inside the car instead of the engine compartment :-)
|
Thanks for the advice. Id really hate cutting the wires so close to the ecu, but if it's necessary I suppose I'll do it.
|
Engine bay looks like shit. I'll get it tuned first, then worry about cleaning it up.

Rear main seal in. Rear stationary gear oring in. Pilot bearing, seal, throwout bearing, Turbo gaskets all in. I need to take more pictures, but when im pissed off under the car, for some reason i just dont feel like it.
Anyways, no more leaks! Went and threw a couple donuts behind Raleys. Seems to be running fine. Time to tune to 12psi! Also need to swap out those solid motor mounts. I heard they can crack my rear iron. Back to stock! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...da0372384a.jpg |

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...078c8d538.jpeg Trouble shooting wastegate problems. Ended up being my boost solenoid hooked up wrong. Next is 12psi tune. |

Made a little progress with the new turbo install.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2e3e863528.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1ebcd4b713.jpg But i ran into a little problem with the turbo. CXRacing Living up to its reputation. Hole in the coolant side of the center housing. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...71bd1b5656.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...65411f0423.jpg |
So it looks like im a dummy. The hole is only in the threaded area of the housing, so im going to run it.
