this was too funny not to share, but my ridiculous exhaust needs gaskets, which need to come overnight from Japan.

so i got a new phone, and its neat. i haven't set it up to do email which is great, but it makes getting the pics off the phone kind of dumb.
the exhaust polished up, and looks great
but
it doesn't fit. well it fits but not with my down pipe. its a whole thing...
i was so bummed it didn't fit i bought an Re Amemiya wing, which i won't be able to paint because its rained for 40 days and 40 nights, just not all in a row....
its pretty neat though, that sticker is staying

apologies for lack of updating. i got a new phone, and it was so nice to not have email or any apps on it. i was taking pics, but had no easy way to post them.
so anyways, i got a cardboard body bag full of exhaust a few days later. shipping is a LOT but its also fast, maybe not furious, but its fast
they took each piece and wrapped it in cardboard, and then wrapped those in cardboard, so it was like a mummy
i should have read the blurb on the FEED website (or fake FEED website or whatever), it actually IS 92mm, its HUGE
i forget that real performance stuff for these cars has a lot of presence, gravitas.

so this exhaust is interesting, its 92mm pipe, and the flanges have a square 90mm bolt pattern. of all things GReddy sells the gaskets. GReddy offers a 92mm system, as an option for the T88 kits. they used to list the pipe and flanges too, but it seems like you can only get stuff as part of a kit now, maybe. the piping is weird, its rolled into a tube and then welded, there is actually a seam on the inside.
here is a pic showing how big it is compared to stock, which is 60mm; too small
i bought bolts from Bellmetric, they have JIS bolts, which i wanted, because that way i don't need weird wrenches.
i actually found a guy on YJA selling JDM bolts, which would have been cool, but even I couldn't justify paying shipping on some bolts and nobody will see, hopefully

Just cause you are on the topic of exhaust. Took this pic the other day and thought I'd share what a type K TC will read 10 inches down stream of the exhaust manifold. I've seen it as high as 1400f
This is regular driving in town 95f degree day, N/A car. . . I've hard to learn the hard way not to skimp on gasket material.. . It also explains why the exhaust tubing looks the way it does over time.

the next challenge was that the downpipe i got, actually turned out to be for an HKS T04E kit, and someone had cut it and spliced on the FEED flange.
i have an HKS T04 manifold, so i really really really thought about swapping turbos.
the problem was, or is that the HKS stuff us the weird truck snap ring coupler deal and my turbo is a V band.
since the V band thing is welded on, i thought about trying to grind the welds. but then i'm still missing the brackets that actually bolt to the coupling.
i also thought about importing an HKS turbo, but its kind of a pita.
but i laid the exhaust next to the car, and it looked like it was a bit shorter than my downpipe, so i got the idea to make an adaptor to use the downpipe i already had...
first was paper
and then wood
in theory i really like this, as it lets me use the thing as a restrictor plate, boost control is nice to have!

its got bolts and jam nuts in the pic, cause the bolts were cheap, and i can cut the head off later to make em studs
the tiny center hole would be great for boost control, but after trying my hole saw and realizing it was going to take ~20 hours to cut the hole, i took it to a local shop
i wanted to start around 55 mm, and go bigger as needed, but the finished thing is like 59mm....

and of course since the adaptor fits perfectly, the exhaust doesn't, or maybe i measured wrong, way wrong....
some might say not even close.....
it is oddly subtle on the car though, left is the FEED exhaust, right is the HKS 50mm Sport
and just to have a funny, its so big it stands up on its own!

so while i was thinking about what to do with the exhaust. i moved on to the intercooler piping.
i had just made it from a pair of 90 degree pipes which was great, super simple. the problem was that it was really tight around the TID and air pump, and also since the IC outlet is under the frame rail, it came out of the IC at kind of a funny angle
the other trouble is that the IC is a 60mm inlet, and that might be a normal size in the rest of the world, its hard to get here; we only have 57mm (2. 1/4") and 63mm (2 1/2")
here is the assembled pipe assembly, notice the dent in the pipe there is also a little slice from the air pump
the solution for the diameter turned out to be a harbor freight pipe expander, which worked great.
turns out the Big Dumb Exhaust makes a nice anchor for the pipe
i also made the dent a little bigger, turned out to not be needed. it also turned out that there is an order to building these, which i got wrong!
the pipe expansion is really subtle,
i did have plenty of pics of the HKS pipe to look at, so i kind of copied that
mine needed an extra 45 degree bit, like the HKS one, and i fooled around with the aluminum pipes for a while, and then just ordered one in silicon, which turned out to be perfect.

i put the HKS RS intake back on, and then made a bracket for the AFM.
and bent it just so
later i decided it was too flashy and painted it black, lol

while i was not having an exhaust, i decided to fix the wiper switch. i haven't had an FC with working wipers since the 90's!
typically i decided to pull the switch, not do anything at all with it, and while i'm waiting fix the meter hood/cluster thing, it was
the last time i had fixed it with some acrylic rods,
but this time i made little paper cylinders and filled those with epoxy. this epoxy worked great here, its got the consistency of soup.
its really nice having the turn signal switch actually attached, lol
i still haven't sent the wiper switch out, so i still don't have wipers... i'm thinking about buying the relays and just doing it myself, or more likely just putting it back, lol

so i had a big list of stuff i wanted to fix/do and so far i have no wipers and no exhaust, so the next logical step was to pull the ecu!
when i swapped to the PFC, i just put it in, and its just sitting there. but the factory ecu is held in with more bolts than the engine, so i at least wanted to mount the ECU so its actually attached.
i did consider drilling holes in the PFC to just run the factory brackets, but i couldn't find the brackets, and was too lazy to go look for an ecu (in theory there is a box of ecus somewhere)
when i did find is Paul Ko's E6K to stock ECU plate, from his old yellow car, and after some cleaning i reused it.
i used some double sided tape to stick the ECU down, its not as good as the JDM Velcro the PFC would have came with new, but it is what i had
i think i did this on a lunch break or something, i guess its kind of a fail, something got done?
