MT Auto Mafia Racing's First Rotary Build

Hey guys,

Wes with Auto Mafia Racing here. We normally dont do tuner type cars, but we have decided to pick up this 1987 Mazda FC RX7 Turbo 2. It has a few lil mods on it we will go over, and we will ask for your guys help to push this lil thing to 350-400 rwhp. Nothing too crazy.

Me test driving the car for the first time.

after 24 hrs of owning her. new wheels and a shop banner

Well went to start the car tonight, and it didnt want to start. Just turned and turned and turned then finally wouldnt. Jumped it with a box and drove it to the gas station. Filled her up with 91 and poured in roughly 1/2 a bottle of 2 stroke oil.

Started up just fine and drove to the meet. Sat for approx 20 mins then wouldnt start when I went to leave.

It just kept spinning but wouldnt fire.

Got a buddy to push it an dropped the clutch and she turned on. But it has ZERO power. It wasnt working at all. Wouldnt really hit boost, and would barely accelerate.

After driving it home a few miles, and trying to floor it to keep up with traffic, bam all of the sudden its running great again.

Raced a full bolt on foxbody, fully stripped, with 3.73 gears and a full spool. We were pretty even on a slight roll. Im happy with it because the car is fast/

Get it back to my shop, turn the car off, then go to crank it up and boom acts like it has no power again.

Anyone got any ideas?

Might want to go over all of your grounds, maybe a wire is loose causing sporadic issues like you've been describing.

Well we went to move the car to a new location and I took a corner hard and boom it died and wouldn't start. I had to push it 1/2 mile mostly up hill. So we towed it out to my acreage and parked it.

Update. We moved to Florida now, and the issue that was there, was that I had blown the ignition fuse. Interesting right? Its okay though, because now we have even more issues.

So we are now down in Ft. Odgen, which is basically in Port Charlotte/North Port FL. Near Sarasota, and Bradenton. I have been playing with the car and its issues a lot and taking it to shows and even the drag strip.

So she is looking good, and got a wash from the long road down. 2600 miles on a semi truck. Now time to clean her up even more, and make sure we can get her issues taken care of so we can actually drive her.

I took the car to a show, and we put it on VMP's Dyno jet. I thought she was going to make at least 250 rwhp. However we only made 211 rwhp and 215 ft lbs... Anyone got any ideas? Previous owner told me he put the stock computer and injectors back on since it wasnt running well at all.

I am really looking to build the car to get about 350 rwhp out of her. I am in FL at sea level, and I am just a little slower than most of the guys on the street and track around here. This isnt a race car, it just needs to be able to do a little pull every now and then or a 1/4 pass and not get embarrassed.

Sounds like you're asking a lot out of it without doing the basics. Have you checked the fuel pump, filter, and injectors? How's your compression? New spark plugs and cables?
211 HP doesn't sound bad if you're running stock turbo with a few, simple mods.

You are right and she is actually getting a tune up and a new leading igniter, well a used one to see if that is indeed our issue which I think it is. Our new shop is almost ready to open so the rx7 is going to be getting a lot more work soon so that it can be the run around and fun street car since our cars all turn into drag cars and we dont like running them on the street.
