86 Turbo GXL Ressurection

Well, on the way SevenStock 16 got stuck in traffic on 57 East. Car started to heat up, and by the time I was able to get out of the middle lane and on the shoulder I think the damage was done.

Long story short, coolant seals are shot. The extent of the damage is not known until I pop the motor open.

Plans for now are to acquire an NA engine and swap that into the car so It can run for now. Looking at picking up a used engine + ecu/harness + smog equipment. The idea is to just use that to have the car be running for now.

For the turbo engine (its an 88 motor) I plan to tear it down and see what the damage is. I'm hoping the rotor housings aren't too warped. I currently have access to a machine shop at school, so I plan check the tolerances there with the high precision tools.

Overall goal for the rebuild of the turbo motor is a solid 250~300 whp.

Going to purchase rebuild kit B from Atkins rotary, but shell out for mazda oem apex seals and side seals. Figured that Mazda got it right and their seals last longer from what I heard. Hopefully track down a s5 bnr turbo/manifold for the true twin scroll.

I'm shooting for more power under the curve rather than raw hp. Not really that educated on what turbos would help me achieve this, but I figure that if it spools quick that's a good start.

Water-meth would be added as well and I plan to run a Megasquirt MS3X v3.57 to control it all.

The NA should be coming soon (checking a motor out in a couple of days), but the turbo rebuild might take a while. Plan is to document the swap of the motor, the rebuild, and whatever modifications (aero) I plan to do.

For now I haven't had a chance to pull the motor out and apart, so after draining coolant I pumped some ATF and wd-40 into the engine via spark plugs hand cranked, rinse repeat. This should hopefully prevent any corrosion until I can pull this motor out (next month hopefully).

And for motivation, here's a picture of my rx-7 at Buttonwillow CCW13. Plan to track the car much more often in the future.

Finally got some work done to the car done. Purchased a engine hoist over black Friday too. Today I undid everything. Harness, fuel lines, coolant hoses, intake, and throttle cable.

All I have left to disconnect before pulling the engine is the downpipe, transmission and oil lines.

Here's some photos of today's work.

Had to push the car up the curb (my driveway has no real ramp). Eventually got it up there.
