1991 FC na - let's do some skids

Just purchased this guy. 1991 RX7 FC na. Paid $2800 for it. Ain't bad. Got 140k on the odo with the original block. It's gonna be a fun time. Anyway, I got a pretty good deal with it. Very very solid & clean car. No rust. Just finished doing a detail & getting it all cleaned up. Main goal is just have a fun DD/autox car. Already fallen in love with it so that's always good. Absolutely LOVE everything about it. Interior is so badass, has awesome options including working cruise, pretty decent power & it corners like a Vette. Already has some nifty stuff like 17" rims, nice headunit & short shifter. Like making these little build threads so I can look back at the progress it's gone through.
Drove all the way down to southern Kentucky & trailered it. Fun time. So come along on this rotary journey!

Plans/Mods:
Clean it. Got a slight smokey smell inside. Shampoo carpets. Clean headliner, dash etc.
Wash & stage 2 buff
Oil/filter change
Plugs
Coolant flush
Fuel filter
New headlights
1 new fog
New driver vent
Fix shift boot
Re-grease sunroof sliders & pass window slider

EXT:
Tint
Rear roof spoiler thingy
New front bumper lights
H4 headlight conversion

Suspension:
Lowering springs
LSD
DTSS eliminator bushings
Rear strut bar

Engine:
Intake
Catback
Religiously check/change oil
IF ENGINE GOES:
Mild streetport & full rebuild
RB header
Professional injector clean
Bigger radiator
Do the clutch as well

Here's the first pic after a quick wash.
1991 FC na - let's do some skids-uxph2su.jpg
The car got sideswiped 2 years ago, but wasn't anything terrible. Driver side rear section has about 1 inch section where you can tell it was bondo'd when you're up close. The car then got a full re-spray after. I have a good friend who is awesome at body work & will probably correct it in the future. Paint is in pretty good shape but can really use a buffing.

The interior is very clean as well except for a driver seat tear, missing driver vent & a slight smoke smell. I detail cars aside from my dealership job so I can get rid of it fairly easily. You can really tell when somebody smoked in it when your rag is tan after cleaning the windows. I had to go over them about 6 times. In the future, I'll take out the seats, shampoo the carpet, seats & headliner & then run a machine inside for about an hour that'll help with the smell.

The day after I did some fun stuff like cleaned all the wheels, changed oil/filter, painted the brakes & installed some mud flappy things (because Subaru guy)

Day after I changed the plugs as they weren't has hard as I thought they'd be. Actually were really easy with the right tool. Car starts up a lot easier now.

Also painted the wiper arms for a little more clean look.
1991 FC na - let's do some skids-k6ctqpc.jpg

Fixed the shift boot with some superglue.
1991 FC na - let's do some skids-wswxjim.jpg

I also:
-Adjusted the headunit so it doesn't stick out as much
-Fixed the loose turn signal switch
-Cleaned the sunroof sliders
-The door cards were really loose. Turns out, neither side had any screws to hold them in. So after a trip to the hardware store, my door cards are perfect!

Ordered a couple odds & ends today again. Some buddies & I put together a little autocross in our school parking lot last night. Was epic. Also found out the car needs some improvements. Like a proper LSD, lowering springs & some more powersteering which I topped off today.

car looks really clean. For what its worth i think its a good idea to start mild with the mods, alot of people pick up an NA and the first thing they want to do is go turbo to make a ton more power. It nice to see somebody else staying NA

Keep it simple, and have fun

^For sure! I also own a WRX that I just completed a build on. That's where I can get my turbo fill. I like the na in this car a lot! And more turbo-more problems.

You got it, no turbo means engine heat is a little easier to manage as well. I would love to build a mild rally looking WRX one day down the road. Something that has ground clearance and nice soft suspension for gravel and bumps, the anti rx7 if you will haha

whats your experience with working on subarus? How are they in terms of reliability, easy to work on ect?

Relatively easy. The community for Subarus is one of the biggest community's around. Same logic as the RX7's. NA: less problems. Turbo:more problems. If you don't keep your oil up to date, car doesn't like that. Same with tuning. But if you kee up to date with it & take good care, it'll return the favor. Amazing cars, awesome mods & one of the best communities out there. Highly recommended one!

very nice, from the pics it looks super straight. I love my NA fc when I rebuilt it I did some porting and got an RX8 E shaft and its one of the most fun cars I've ever driven(not that I have bias) .
with that many miles on the original motor you might want to just rebuild it before you drive it too hard and potentially ruin your housings.

Had a bored Friday. Did a stage 2 buff on the car. Hot damn! Paint came out really nice. Still has some spots of tree sap & other **** from sitting outside for some years. Also got some goodies. Going to have to have local exhaust shop put my catback on. First bolt I tried taking off snapped off right away. Even tried heat/pb blaster. No dice. Probably install the springs next week sometime.

Installed the rear part of the springs today. Really really easy install. Didn't have time to do the fronts today.

Now some wheel spacers in the back and maybe something to adjust the camber you're getting and it'll look sweet. Very clean FC. Nice buy!

Got some new headlights from eBay. Pretty cheap so we'll see how they go.

Got the catback on yesterday as well. What a bitch. Snapped both bolts even with a torch. Eventually got em out & fitted the new one on. Sounds awesome!

Sorry for no updates lately. Been enjoying the car in the snow way too damn much! It shoots fireballs like crazy. I love it. I got the front springs on as well. Sits very nice. Need to get some rear spacers. I had my alt belt break on me a couple days ago out hooning. What I thought would be a bitch to install the belt turned out to be really easy. I'm on the hunt for an LSD now

Haven't updated this in a LONG time! I ended up enjoying the car through winter. Did fantastic in the snow! I went to 2 autocrosses, took a trip down to Bloomington with it & then my girlfriend & I purchased a house. Unfortunately we needed a hefty down payment so I sold the RX7 Did great on the sale but regret doing it since. Was seriously one of the best car's I've ever owned. Only thing I wanted to change was the diff to an LSD. Here are a couple more pics
