AB 1987 Mazda Turbo 2 (the do as I go build)

So where to start lol. Back in high school I was deciding on what kind of car I wanted to get and had many to choose from I guess. Like every other common minded teenage kid at the time I look at 240's and skylines along with RX-7's. One of my good friends at the time had a 87 Turbo 2 and that cars was what got me so hooked into them. So upon searching kijiji like everyday I chanced upon a 1990 Mazda Rx-7 non-turbo for dirt cheap. Went to go check it out and bought the following day. She looked like this (the one on the left) buddies on the right

After buying her a lot changed on her and she looked like this before I sold her

So, while at work at my previous employer one of my friends there had his pretty clean 1987 Turbo 2. It had/has low mileage on it and runs like a top. Newer suspension in it and a Mazda Reman engine in it with all receipts for services and the engine itself. Also came with extras on it like a Fuel cut defender, Racing beat Rev II exhaust system, and short shifter. This is how it looked when I got a hold of her, with a little photo skills

AB More Updates

After buying it I had just a little bit of time to throw some parts into it and get used to how she drove before the great ol' Canadian winter started. I first installed a NRG steering hub, NRG quick release, and a Momo Gotham steering wheel.

After this I decided to pick up and install a set or Bride Low Max Gias 3 seats into the car to hold me in a little bit better.

I had a set of BC Racing BR Type coilovers from my last Rx-7 laying around so I decided to install those a long with a set of S5 tails I picked up.

So winter hit and one of my buddies sold his Rx-7 so I grabbed some left over parts off of him that did not go with the car and just before winter picked up a set of drift spares.

AB Updates Continued

So during the winter I replaced all of the main air hoses and all of the coolant hoses along with other preventative maintenance. Just stuff to keep her going strong without breaking down. Did not modify it much besides installing a race 3" straight pipe from turbo back. (******* loud, will upload video when I can find it) So when summer (or as we call it up here 2 month construction season) I drove her around for cruises and to local track events around here. Picked up a 240 pignose lip, painted it black, and threw it on.

Nabbed up a great toy hook charm that I drug around for the year scrapping on every inclined parking lot entrance there is. Also threw some stickers on cause all the cool kids are doing it these days.

It stayed like this for a bit until I happened upon a set of rims while picking up a car for one of my friends. They are Work Rezaxs. 17x10 +32 in the rear and 17x9.5 +23 in the front with 215/45/17 rubber all around. Threw them on and did not mind how they looked.

Now it is another winter time and she has been in the garage getting some work done to her. Will update with more in the following days. Thanks

Well computer farted out on me and I will update as soon as I can. So far the build has been going great as I am now driving it. Just waiting on exhaust gaskets. Besides that she runs really great.

Sick car man. I want to get some better seats, mainly because I'm 6' 4" and really want to sit lower so I'm not banging my head on the roof. Did your seats sit lower than the stock ones by much? Thanks in advance!

Hey sudowoodo. The brides have actually a little less head room than the stock turbo 2 seat. I am 6 foot 1 but fit decent. If I sit 100% straight up then I hit the roof. But has enough room for a helmet.

AB Winter Update (After Winter)

So I ordered some parts just before winter and I planned on doing a bunch to the car as it was in the garage for winter. I managed to get some things done but due to the job I had at the time in which I worked like everyday all day (not joking) I got some done but not all. Ordered a corksport FMIC kit to see how it is and to switch from the heat soak prone top mount. Most of the install went by pretty decently just needed some minor fitting issues and cutting of a few pieces. The pieces that needed cutting were just below the two headlight mounts and front bumper beam support. The kit does require the removal of A/C but when I bought the car it did not have A/C.

Also picked up a S5 front bumper to "update" the looks of the car. Just need to get the S5 trim and it all painted up.

AB More Updates

After this I decided to do some work on the interior. First I went on a hunt too find a black dash instead of the burgundy one that was in it. After searching for quite a while a local Rx7 Club member had one he was holding around.

Then like all of the cool kids these days I decided too test my hand at removing the sound deadening. I search and asked a whole bunch of people and decided upon the dry ice method of removing the sound deadening. I got some from a good friend who got it threw a connection from work for free. Dry ice makes doing this job so easy.

Once I got all of this done I threw the dash and all other interior things back instead except for the heater controls (have to rewire them due to cut wiring harness). Then I completed the housing and piping install for the intercooler and had to make one of these bad boys so I could fit an air filter onto it.
1987 Mazda Turbo 2 (the do as I go build)-gcf4dzp.jpg
Then after this I went onto plumbing in and wiring in my Defi white racer boost gauge and my works engineering manual boost controller. That is sadly mostly all I have gotten done in the winter besides normal maintenance stuff like oil change, fluid flushes, and spark plugs and wires. So I have put it all together and took it out for the season opener in Edmonton.

Into Another Winter

So I have been gone for a while due to work. Here comes the little updates that I have. It is now winter here in the great white north and the car is under a cover and put away for a while pending decisions on what I want to do with it. I went down to a neighboring city here in Alberta, Calgary, for a car meet with the car group I am involved in called Team Royalty. Decided to drive down the Rx to there and see how it went. Made it down there with only 1 electrical problem and another problem I have to deal with still. Only two pics from the trip of my car.

After that weekend trip I decided to pick up a new daily and found some different rims for it. 2005 Mazda 3 Sport GS

1987 Mazda Turbo 2 (the do as I go build)-bifaoqt.jpg

Then I decided to throw back on the pignose lip with the s4 front bumper on as i felt it look better and really didnt want to deal with the trim swap just yet. Also in this time the oil cooler lines decided to not be oil cooler lines anymore but be holes instead. So in went some S.S. Oil cooler lines brought to you by CorkSport.

Also the door trim decided to fall off lol

At some point during all of this I got really tired of the burgundy interior that it came with. So after searching for a while I chanced upon a super clean set of interior carpets and pieces. Not a clip missing, chip, rip, stain, or crack in any of it. Ripped the **** out of the burgundy bullshit out and threw the way cleaner black interior pieces in. After a long session of steam cleaning and interior detailing of course.

1987 Mazda Turbo 2 (the do as I go build)-sdrovrh.jpg
From there I really just drove it and didn't do anything really extensive as it was nearing the end of the season we have. Just basic maintenance and all of that other bullshit no one wants to hear about.

Now it is winter and I need to plan on what the hell I am gonna do and what to buy. So far I need to rewire the car as I have no dash lights at the moment and if certain things have fuses in their circuits it will just make the system reset. Relocate the battery to the rear in order to have a bigger normal sized battery (optima redtop), possibly delete power steering, and reattach trim pieces such as the hatch spoiler and door trim pieces.
