WOW... Just looked at this project

Dude, those welds on your cage are not going to pass!! Or shouldn't... That is some poor welding that is going to fail. I bet if I took a hammer to those I could pound them apart, which is a bad weld.

I am just speaking from a safety point that if you are depending on this cage you should grind them out and reweld them probably with a tig instead of a mig (and if it was done with a tig SHAME ON YOU!) most cage requirements required their cages to be tig welded anyway.

The problem is that there isn't enough heat penetration into the metal. There is lots of porosity which is going to fail. You want a smooth weld with good penetration. That is not a smooth weld...

"Standing on soap box:

The reason I HATE home made cages is that it is a safety concern. If you did get into a bad wreck an you were going to depend on the cage, the tubes would bust free and probably injure you more then if you were to leave them out. (in specific the one by your head would bust free and probably jab you in the face)

IN FACT you are probably safer to leave the cage out then to weld it badly. What good is a cage in a car if it is going to injure you in a wreck.

This is coming from the world of Stage Rally Racing where we depend on our cages for safety because we are driving over the speed limit on gravel roads with lots of trees and steep terrain. Most of the time these cars retire because of a bad accident...

I am also lecturing you and anyone else who is looking at this and thinking that they can do it. unless you KNOW how to weld on a professional scale, don't weld your cages...

Just by googling here is an example of what the welds should look like
