Hey guys,

sorry if you have seen some of these pictures. i'm just making a build thread now.

here is my fb build...

here is what i started with, a bone stock 84 gsl

i then purchased the respeed race coilover kit for the front and rear. I called up one of my local stock car shops and ordered up some 15x8 diamonds. a nardi wheel and got the wood lathe going to make a matching shifter.

Than i finally searched and searched and got some 175/55/r15 for all four corners
so i car was driveable now..
And i got bored so i put a roof rack on and made a fairing. but it is not on the car anymore

Then just over the past year i decided that i wanted to go lower. I was at the very low limit of my stock strut tubes and illumina inserts. So i made my own new struts. bought some koni 8610 inserts which are larger diameter than the illuminas so i found some mk2 supra struts that fit the inserts and combined them

the supra struts

koni vs illumina

my respeeds sitting and waiting

so i cut the supra tubes off, made a new bottom on the lathe, welded it on and turned it smooth for a press fit

Attachment 717440
Attachment 717441

then bored out the rx7 spindle bottoms to accept the new tubes
made some new spring/height adjuster purches and this is the end product.

the height difference from old strut to new one

you might be close on the rear but i doubt it in the front unless you have made your own front struts like above. even when i had my height adjusters at the bottom on the front and resting on the top of the suspension it was at least an inch heigher.

post up some of your pics? i'd like to see yours. i never see any fbs low

What's the story with your exhaust?

Joon-Pr 10-06-11 07:47 AM

Len-Len 10-06-11 08:22 AM

funny thing...i was coming back from H2Oi and we detoured through NYC and on the exit ramp before the lincoln tunnel i hit a huge bump and it took out my inner fender. and yes NYC streets do suck but i handled it

Colbskee 10-06-11 11:28 AM

i have had it where the front was at this height, with cut springs, and very little of my bumpstops left. but it was almost undriveable. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...4_232807_n.jpg

Now it's sitting at this height(i hate stock wheels :( )

4.5" all around

MountainScreamer 10-09-11 06:32 PM

Could you describe a little more how you modified the front spindles to accept the supra tube?
How far down did you machine? Did you stick it on a lathe? How much did it cost?
I'm really interested in this because I would like to experiment with different shock diameters.

I'm really interested in this because I would like to experiment with different shock diameters.

i cut the strut tube off the rx7 spindles. then bored the hole out to 1.95" on a mill with an adjustable boring head. I bored down to the original weld. make sure when you bore down, the distance is longer than the diameter of the tube you are pressing in. decided to put it on the mill because the spindle is an odd shape and there would be less setup on the mill. I also used a 1-5/8 drill (i think that was the size) to drill through the bottom of the spindle bore to open up the bottom of the strut tube hole where the original tube was welded in to the spindle bottom. then after making the new tube bottoms for the supra tubes to fit the 8610 dampers. i turned the tubes down to make an interference fit for the spindle bore. as far as cost... nothing. i did all the work myself.

the outcome with 375lb springs and the koni's and the ride height. i couldn't have asked for a smoother ride. the dampers work really well with low and high speed bump.

hope it helps. let me know if you have any more questions

777CheekZ 10-12-11 06:44 PM

sweet man im from montreal not too far apart...
what you did is pretty much the same thing tht i plan on doing with my 85 XD
its in storage now...planning on rebuilding it from the ground up this winter...maybe next year u can come to montreal for one of our jdm mondays or for UltraRide even :P

777CheekZ 10-12-11 06:49 PM

*do u have disc brakes or drum brakes in the rear?*

orion84gsl 10-12-11 07:06 PM

It's a GSL, so he has rear disc brakes. Love the look DMclean. I tried to go about an inch higher than that with the stock strut tubes. I really didn't like it. Of course my tires are a lot wider. It tore the hell out of my fenders.

777CheekZ 10-12-11 07:20 PM

and what exhaust is tht? XD
i ordered a magnaflow with the same style (obviously its a custom length)

i made the exhaust but the muffler is still stock. was planning on getting a new one.

orion84gsl 10-14-11 06:59 PM

Actually I'm going to be stealing your shifter boot idea. I got a bottle of CR Black last night and it came with a black bag. Just wondering what size bottle yours came from. Mine is a 40oz and I'm not sure if the bag will fit without some serious surgery. Thanks.
